Pope asks India not to ban religious conversions
Hindustan Times ^ | May 20, 2006

India has responded with diplomatic equanimity to Pope Benedict XVI's seemingly provocative remarks condemning attempts to ban religious conversion in certain states.

The pope had told India’s new ambassador to the Vatican, Amitava Tripathi, on Thursday that the country should "firmly reject" attempts "to legislate clearly discriminatory restrictions on the fundamental right to religious freedom". He had also taken note of the "disturbing signs of religious intolerance which had troubled some regions of the nation".

New Delhi responded on Friday with a statement, reiterating the constitutional "freedom of conscience" and the right to freely profess, practise and propagate religion. "It is acknowledged universally that India is a secular and democratic country where adherents of all faiths enjoy equal rights," said a foreign ministry spokesperson.

It was the pope's second declaration this week in defence of religious freedom in countries where Christians are a minority. In India, the statement comes in the backdrop of Rajasthan planning to become the sixth state to enact the anti-conversion law the pope was referring to. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Orissa already have laws that bar conversions but allow re-conversions to Hinduism. Jharkhand has declared its intention to enact a similar law.

The BJP-ruled Rajasthan, however, has not been able to convince Governor Pratibha Patil to give her assent to the Religious Conversion Bill. She returned the bill making a point similar to the one made by the pope -- that its provisions would affect the right to freedom of religion.

The BJP has often attributed attacks on Christian missionaries, including the murder of Graham Staines in Orissa, as reactions to their proselytising. During his recent Bharat Suraksha Yatra, BJP president Rajnath Singh had described proselytising "dangerous" and asked all BJP-ruled states to enact a similar law.

Too bad, though, that you still can't lie straight.

I Admit, not as good as you are in matters of lying.

Even in bed?
Old man. At least I dont wet it bitching over not being given the right to convert Hindus. You should use the toilet and not FR if its not too much of a trouble for you ol' sourpuss.

Thus far, more than TWO HUNDRED MILLION CHINESE CHRISTIAN CONVERTS!

Are you sure they are true "Christian converts" and not your usual CCCC....... "Cheaper Chinese Copies of Chrisitanity" the "use and throw version" created by violating the copyright rules? ..........like they did with Microsoft?

BTW it makes more sense to try the worlds first and only "open source" religion .....the best in the World......Hinduism.

Rubbish.

There is no Capitalism in China. None whatsoever.

Only insane and amoral and absolutely lawless forms of institutionalized and systemic greed and avarice and cronyism and corporatism and militarism and manifold money-making scams at least 40% of which involve patent theft and counterfeiting and copying and lying and looting and thieving and bank and other financial institution frauds and the theft of Hundreds of Billions of Dollars and never to be paid back "bad loans" which make up more than 50% of all bank transactions. And the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars scooped off the top and exported by every warlord wannabe member and every family member of the self-annointed, self-appointed and at least temporarily self-perpetuating predatory Peking based pack of mass-murdering gangster bastards that pretends to be a government.

All of which needs to be seen to be believed and all of which is even more insane than the various forms of the same amoral greed and avarice-driven insanity which presently pretty much presently consumes India's lying, looting, counterfeiting, cheap Xerox Copy of Judeo-Christian/Western/Human Civilization cloning, bigshot-wannabe elitists.

By and large Indian society is open-minded , Christians are welcome there and the situation is nothing like what is in Pakistan, Afganistan etc. There is a party in Indian politics that likes to whip up pan-nationalistic fervour appealing to a narrow hindu ideology but they fail in elections as they do not even appeal to a broad and vast society like India where every state has its localised culture. There are many Christians who are involved in Indian politics, film industry etc and well integrated in common society.

<< Temporary success. When these people get money, they will realise the need to be spiritual and intellectual. Then they will grow out of Christianity. Much like Europe is doing today. >>

Great wealth, such as that which has only ever been created and sustained in Human History only in the United States of America is built and stands only upon the Rock of Judeo-Christian/Roman/American Law and upon that Law's primary Principle of Individual Liberty.

After its present corrupt and murderous house of cards inevitably implodes, China's only hope of recovering and of building a sustainable economy, lies in the fact of its 200 million plus and growing Christians. And upon the Rock of the Rule of Law those Good Men and their descendents will build after they eventually create and establish China's first ever in its much-vaunted 55-years-old "history," Government of and by and for its People.

The Euro-peons, including the inhabitants of their squalidly socialistic offshore satellite state, long ago entered their post-Christian Era and are already well established on their plunge into their islamic era.

And the further plunge that will precipitate into the new dark ages.

From which their by then renamed Eurabia will most likely never again emerge.

"Will you be saying that if we decide not to export our jobs to you anymore?"

"Our jobs"? What exactly is "our jobs"? Is it something guarantied as a birth right for only Americans? I thought the jobs belonged to he who worked for it.

They'd be happy to, G-K but for their superior intelligence which has permitted them to see the products of both Hinduism and Christianity and they prefer the American Model to that of the beautiful Balinese.

And, of course, except they are already in Hell and are struggling to get out -- and not to ensure they're there for eternity.

<]:^)~<

Blessings to you and to all of those you love, from your friend, Brian

Hey and BTW how many Muslims were you able to convert to Christianity in Saudi Arabia?

Not many I guess? Why not start an inquisition like you did on the hapless Hindus in Goa and let us all see how it works out?
Like what Ann Coulter had said .......Kill all their leaders and convert them to Christianity.

Have the cojones to do that?

Let's not give too much credit where it's not due. American companies export jobs to India because on the whole it is cheaper. That's it.

"I WOULD expect secular India to enact lws that would exempt humanitarian and educational activity, while curbing violence and fraud. Would that be OK with you?"

So, your answer is NO?

You wrote: ""Humanitarian activity" is a highly abused word. It never comes without any strings attached. India may be poor but even we know very well there is no free lunch. So what would you want in return?"

A follower of Christ wants to be happy with you and with God forever.

You wrote: "...there is a very thin line between education and indoctrination."

If people aren't satisfied with the education or indoctrination they are receiving, they can walk right out the door. Is that OK with you?

"90% of the conversions are pure scams."

As I said before, prove it.

"Its time India puts a stop to this kind of shill activity put of by the hordes of soul harvesters comming to India from outside."

Thank you. You admit that freedom of religion only goes so far in India. That's a shame.

"There is truth in almost every religion. You may find the tenets of one religion more appealing then the other but to say that there is no truth in Hinduism and that only Christianity is the truth, thats is not religion but indoctrination."

Never said there were not elements of truth in other religions. But the fullness of the Truth resides in the Catholic faith. I really don't care if your religion allows for many "paths" to God. Mine does not. That is not indoctrination, by the way. It is sticking to what Christ Himself said. Something you obviously ignore when you say you as a Hindu, worship Him alongside other gods. I truly don't understand how you can worship Jesus after he said that, "no one comes to the Father except through me." How do you reconcile Jesus' teachings that there is only ONE God, and yet worship Him alongside other Hindu gods. Why worship Him if you do not believe what he said?

"In secular India the Indian government is not allowed to promote or favour any particular religion then how can a foreign government (the government of Vatican) be allowed to actively promote and further the cause of "one" religion on Indian soil?

How is the Indian government promoting what the Vatican is doing? If anything, the Indian government is doing the exact opposite. It is tying the hands of religious organizations. Religious freedom apparently means something else over there.

"The judiciary can certainly ascertain if a person is genuinely converting of his own conscience and fully understands and is able to explain the tenets of his faith he/she is converting into and also the reason why he/she feels the need to convert. That would be enough to ascertain if he/she is genuinely influenced by Christianity and not just falsely indoctrinated or simply a party to some spurious arrangement in return for some material/monetary benefits.

This still does not explain the central question. What business is it of the judiciary to do this at all? Why should one have to prove their faith to a government body?

".........but to say that there is no truth in Hinduism and that only Christianity is the truth, thats is not religion but bigotry.

Oh please. Knock it off. Just because I don't agree with your polytheistic belief system does not make me a bigot. As far as I am concerned you may believe whatever you like. It makes no difference to me nor does it anger me.

Just because I don't see truth in your religion does not make me a bigot. I am doing nothing to stop you from espousing your beliefs. I'd be a bigot if I were trying to stop you out of hatred or ignorance. I'm doing no such thing. In fact, I find Hinduism fascinating. That does not however, change the fact that I believe it to be a false religion. That does not make one a bigot, it merely means I disagree.

Ah, I see. India institutes religious repression. Pope condemns it. Pope's words are provocative, not India's actions.

Sometimes, propaganda is just too easy to see through.

Play with semantics all you want pal. You know what I mean. I'll rephrase it for you though, "jobs being exported to you FROM AMERICA." Better?
