President Bush speaks alongside Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in Washington March 16, 2006. Bush has long opposed making English the country's national language, Gonzales said on Friday, the day after the Senate voted to do so. (Jason Reed/Reuters)

English-Plus?
Get real. When we can't support English as the official language of the U.S., you've lost this Bush-bot.

President George W. Bush has long opposed making English the country's national language, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said on Friday, the day after the Senate voted to do so. Praytell, why? To leave the door open to bilingualism or multilingualism in the future, perhaps

"The president has never supported making English the national language," Gonzales saidTHis should be interesting. Maybe the House should give Bush a choice. Make being an illegal alien a felony and really put the military on the border with a massive wall and we'll drop the English as official language policy, but keep the English is the unifying language line.

Heard Reid on the radio calling the English as official language of the U.S. as a racist law. Didn't know Bush and Reid were on the same page.

Just now on John Gibson's Big Story, Judge Nap said the Senate did nothing new in these two days on English- effectively it was grandstanding.

This is so stupid.
English as official language would save tax payers money. It would compel people from other lands to learn English in order to function well in MOST of the states. It might provide a degree of continuity and help others "assimilate" if in fact that is what they wish to do.
The thought of voluntarily moving to another country and NOT learning the prevailing language is just so moronic.

What is the practical significance of calling English the national language? Isn't it just a meaningless resolution? But I can understand Bush opposing making a language he can't speak the national language. Haha, aren't I the card?

Maybe this all just a big misunderstanding because someone at the WH failed to use 'linguistic precision' [the new WH buzzword, even newer than 'comprehensive immigration plan'].

The reason he opposes it is that he isn't entirely comfortable speaking it. He mangles Spanish, too, I've heard. Languages have no hold on him.
To: NormsRevenge
The man is just NOT a conservative. Even "English Only" must be watered down.

Our forefathers never wanted a national language or they would have added it in the constitution but they did want it as a preferred language. A preferred English status has a better chance in court than making it a national language because some judge could rule that it interferes with the 1st amendment.
