A veteran of two wars, ship surrenders to sea (High Graffics Warning)
US Navy ^ | 05/18/06 | Larry Wheeler

The ex-Oriskany, a decommissioned aircraft carrier, was sunk 24 miles off the coast of Pensacola, Fla., on May 17 to form an artificial reef. The 888-foot ship took about 37 minutes to sink below the surface.

I thought that global warming was causing the rise in sea levels.

Just to head off any argument - Essex class and Ticonderoga class are practically the same thing. The Ticonderoga's are sometimes known as the "long-hulled Essex's"

In other news, it was learned that the ex-Oriskany, a decommissioned aircraft carrier, had been converted to a prison to house Al Quaeda prisoners transferred from Gitmo. Due to a clerical error, we forgot about the housing arrangement until after the ship was sunk. Oh well.

I'm sure they stripped the ship before they sank it.

So what was the purpose of having the Admirals barge on the flight deck?

Also, I believe they are required to remove all toxic materials and fluids/oils prior to sinking.

Anybody know what the depth is at that point in the Gulf?

I was wondering how they picked any particular location for it. I mean, they didn't just sail it out of sight of land and say "this'll do". They chose the specific location. I wonder what criteria they use for sinking sites?

Millions are spent removing anything that might set off the tree huggers!

The depth was about 250 feet, so people can dive her. Not all toxins were removed either, but they believe they will slowly dissipate over the next 100 years.

Where the bottom doesn't have any place in the sunlight for corals to adhere, they cannot grow. No corals, no higher forms of life.

The ship provides a gazillion places for all manner of life to find a place to anchor, thus providing the basis for a whole ecosystem of life.

It also makes a fun place for recreational diving.

There's quite a market for scrap steel.

True. I wonder if the cost of recycling it it prohibitively high? Also, old ships make pretty cool museums. We have one (the Turner Joy) here in Bremerton, WA.

Yeah and the oil platforms down there have become oasis of life in that dessert. The Greenies are actually starting to like oil platforms.

It housed electronics and communications equipment used to control the demolition charges. The idea was that the boat would float off the flight deck and be recovered.

Wouldn't it have been a touch more exciting to sink her using an exocet or some other missile? ;)

Sorry, sometimes I let my mind wander without a guardian.

I think this was the ship John McCain took off from before he was shot down. He was on Fox yesterday talking about it.

So what was the purpose of having the Admirals barge on the flight deck?

I wondered that to. Maybe it was holding test equipment they wanted to save after the sinking? Then again maybe it was just a "I wonder what will happen if..." thing.
