The internet was built at taxpayer expense when it was the arpanet. While there is no doubdt that the telecom companies have spent large amounts on infrastructure, they have also benefited. None of them are going broke. But they also see the writing on the wall. They want to control the flow of information. traditional print media no longer has the influence it onece had. Cable stations are losing viewership and more and more people get their information through the internet, which they do not control content wise. It also makes it easier for challengers of incumbents to get information out. That is a nono to the guys in DC.

Not arguing with you just don't think a private company is the answer. The telecom companies are making huge amounts of money and that money is feeding into washinton. The corruption of Enron and Worldcom still exists in the telecom companies.
