Illegal border crossers step up effort to enter U.S. after Bush's speech
KVOA Tucson Channel 4 News ^ | Paul Cicala

Posted on 05/16/2006 8:43:47 PM PDT by SandRat

Thousands of illegal immigrants cross the U.S-Mexico border into Arizona every day.

“To better yourself, for your family, and for a better life,” says Alfonso Miramontez, who’s from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, a town that's about an 8-hour bus ride from Nogales.

Miramontez says, once he heard the U.S. might be sending National Guard troops to the border, he immediately headed north, and was planning to illegally cross into Arizona Monday night.

“It’ll now be much harder to cross through the desert," says Miramontez, ”but the Army (National Guard) on the border won’t stop me.”

Like Miramontez, Eduardo Reyes, an immigrant from Mexico City, just arrived to the border town of Nogales, Sonora with the intention, “of crossing into Arizona and finding work in the United States,” says Reyes.

Miramontez says, “It’s bad in Mexico. It’s also hard because the U.S. soldiers are fighting wars in other countries, and now, many are going to be along the border. When I cross, it scares me and makes me think twice.”

Miramontez adds, “I just want to be happy, and I’ll try to work in the U.S., no matter what happens.”

It is really hard for me to understand why so many do not grasp the pure common sense of securing the border and then figuring out how to deal with illegals already here.

You can call me a conspiracy theorist if you like, but I'm sensing and ulterior motive behind the federal government's movements towards "controlling the borders."

When the CFR-members in Congress get behind something, I tend to get suspicious. Conservatives have been griping about immigration for years and now, all of a sudden it's the major headline every day. I think the sudden interest by our policy makers is going to lead to what the President mentioned last night: a secure, biometric ID card that you'll need to get a job in he USA. This will have to extend to citizens as well.

This whole immigration debate is going to a national ID card. The CFR-world federalist bunch are going to use the momentum to push this through. Just wait and see. Soon it will be, "Ach, Haben sie ihr Papieren, mein Herr?"

Good. I'm glad that foreigners are afraid of our National Guard. Let's hope that once the NG is on the border, more Mexicans will be scared. Scared enough to stay home and try to fix their own country.

Word is circulating the small amount of Guard will not even be there on a semi permanent status for a year, but rather they'll rotate in and out every 15 days. Anyone confirm them?

First hint: "cha-ching!"
Everyone benefits from the coyote, to Vicente from the return vouchers,
to the local bank that loans them $$$ for a home and car, etc., etc.
Votes for illegal immigration supporting legislators.
Cheap, compliant, hard-working (de facto slave) labor force for contractors
nurserymen, farmers, factory operators, etc.

By the way, nice of you (and a bunch of us) to be compassionate
to give 'em free healthcare, eduction, etc.
See, we benefit by getting to feel good about ourselves.
Well, that's what some Republican legislators would tell us.

Like a Freeper said the other night. Bush saying anything about border enforcement is like a bartender yelling "last call." Everybody left in Mexico will runn for the border.

Soon it will be, "Ach, Haben sie ihr Papieren, mein Herr?"

I'm afraid that already describes the situation for many in the USA.
The people known as "legal citizens".
Pulled over by the police? Produce a drivers license and proof of insurance
or bad things happen.
Boarding a plane? Bend over!
(Hell, I was getting the "sir, can we do an extra inspection on your
bag?" years before 9-11. I guess I was such an average, middle-aged
white guy, I just had to be a Serbian terrorist)
Etc.
It's the illegals that rarely have to worry about that documentation hassle.

“I just want to be happy, and I’ll try to work in the U.S., no matter what happens.”

We could make the border airtight in a couple of days.

China has 100-110 million of these and sells them for $3 a pop. Maybe WalMart could negotiate a bulk deal.

You are not a conspiracy theorist when you are stating proveable facts. What we are looking at is a conspiracy fact.

Gonzales was pretty pathetic in that interview. Not militarizing our border - have to be careful to not offend our friends - NG will have right to defend themselves (??)

transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0605/16/sitroom.02.html

(snip)

BLITZER: Well, what do you think? Some of your conservative friends think this is a facade, that these troops going to the border for two-week periods of time without even weapons is useless.

GONZALES: Well, I think having a strong show of force along the border will have a deterrent effect.

BLITZER: Are they actually going to be on the border, though, or as opposed to being behind the scenes?

GONZALES: Well, I don't -- there will be a sign of force that will be visible along the border. Clearly, the National Guard troops will be there to support the work of the Border Patrol officers. They're there to provide a supportive role. They will not be engaged in law enforcement.

But I think any time you have that kind of visible show of force, I think it will have a deterrent effect.

BLITZER: Will they be armed? In other words, are you fully clear on the rules of engagement these military forces will have?

GONZALES: Well, obviously, that will be something that will have to be worked out. Those rules of engagement will have to be very, very clear so there's no misunderstanding. Clearly, though, these folks will have -- will have the opportunity and the authority to defend themselves, to protect themselves. But as to the specific rules of engagement, that will be something that will have to be worked out.

BLITZER: Will they carry weapons?

GONZALES: Again, I think -- that will be something that will have to be worked out. But I'm quite confident they certainly will have the authority to protect themselves.

BLITZER: If there's a show of force, as you say, along the border of Mexico, isn't this the same thing as militarizing the border with a good friend, Mexico? And people in Mexico would understandably be upset about that?

GONZALES: We want to be very, very careful, of course, about making it clear to Mexico and other folks along the border that this is not about militarizing the border. We have had National Guard troops working along the border for quite some time...

BLITZER: But only a few hundred.

GONZALES: ... on counter-narcotics efforts. Clearly, this -- we're talking about an increased number here, but one of the reasons the president went out yesterday to talk to the American people and to our friends in Mexico is to make it clear what his objectives are here. And that is to secure the border. This is not to militarize the border.

I know - they keep babbling about "economic self-interest" - what the hell is bank robbing and drug dealing if not "economic self-interest"?

Our leaders are either too dumb to be leading or too evil.

I'll be more than happy to provide that BBQ sauce for the crow and eat it with you. Sadly, I suspect you are correct, however. Too bad, Mrs. smooth makes a fine sauce.

I remember many years ago in the 50's my Dad (A vet from Patton's 3rd Army) often saying, "Son, our freedom depends on our will to fight". I believed him of course, but I was just a tyke.

Today, with my Dad long passed, I still hear his words and wonder if there are enough of us who grasp such a basic concept.

I know that the President is very understanding of people who just want to better themselves and their families. Is bank robbery going to be OK now with the new amnesty plan?

If it was okay for Pancho Villa....
