The New York Times ^

Posted on 05/16/2006 11:35:07 AM PDT by raj bhatia

The Senate defeated, 55 to 40, a proposal by Senator Johnny Isakson, Republican of Georgia, that lawmakers demand that border-security measures be in place before beginning a guest-worker program of the kind envisioned by President Bush.

One answer to solve this is to vote the current group in Congress out. Find good conservatives that will do the will of the people. It may take a few elections, but we can make changes.

How do you vote against someone? Doesn't that mean you would have to vote for the other candidate?

Who said anything about the president. This is a question of legislation and the President has no say in it. From this viewpoint, I thought his speech yesterday made no sense--what power does he have to decide anything about making laws. Its the Senate where the immigration battle will be won or lost. Period

Agreed, but it is Bush who is taking all the flack on the issue - a lot of misguided folks can't seem to grasp that Bush is not the problem...

tomahawk, have you ever reread some of your posts? Are you always so pessimistic? I don't mean to be critical, because if that's the way you feel, then so be it.

I do not agree with President Bush on everything, but neither do I blame him for all the problems! The United States didn't get in this situation overnight, and we aren't going to solve the problems in one fell swoop. I think it's time for cooler heads to prevail and work toward a solution rather than an attempt to dissolve or destroy any accomplishments we've made. Bush seems to have got the message that something had to be done, and perseverance and persuasion can work to further our goals rather than all the doom and gloom IMHO.

I believe many of them had graduation speeches to attend to that were scheduled way before this vote. Let's give some benefit of the doubt on some of these Republicans at least.

I am just about there Brother let me tell ya.

The thing the GOP needs to fear is the moment the DNC gets wise and starts calling for impeachment of Bush for criminal neglect in enforcement of the laws of this land. You will be able to hear more crickets complaining than the Conservative base of the GOP.

Perhaps they are already thinking this way and are behind setting up this issue as it is. It manners very little the DNC and the Clintoons have an even weaker history on this issue. Since when has facts and truth ever stood in their way to power?

We've had many first steps towards complete amnesty.

This is certainly a sign of the times. Bush should be impeached on his refusal to enforce the law. He's most certainly not doing much to protect and defend here by opening the door to our southern invasion.

hahaha, you are so funny

Comon the guy is 88 years old, if he hasn't retired yet, he never will. This guy intends to be there for life. He is running against John Raese, a failed 1980's Republican statewide candidate. He will win another 6 years by another 60-40 margin. (though he might not serve all 6 years, the KKK Senator might die soon, he cant talk at all)

Hi, Peach.

I think the question on supporting the President's 'policies' referred specifically to his immigration policies, and CNN pointed out that only 7% of those polled said it was the most or one of the most important issues to them.

One more caveat to your post - the poll sampled those who watched the President's speech, not the 'real world.'
