May 16, 2006--Senator Maria Cantwell (D) from Washington has been on the defensive lately. She has antagonized some of the political left with her stand on Iraq and her vote on the Alito nomination. The state's Democratic Party Chairman raised doubts about her campaign last week and her GOP opponent ran an early ad blitz.
Add it all together and Cantwell's support has fallen for the fourth consecutive month and the fifth time in the last six months. The incumbent began the new year with a fifteen percentage point lead over challenger Mike McGavick (R). Now, that lead has fallen to a mere five percentage points, 46% to 41%.
A month ago, Cantwell led 48% to 40%

I am from the eastern half of the state.
King county drags this entire beautiful state down. It needs to be broken up as well, because there are huge pockets of conservatives even there. KC is a corrupt monster.
But we're working on it.
Let's not forget that the 2000 election involved a recount(!) during which she magically came from behind, plus a relatively strong libertarian candidate.

Well, now just how does one get to be an expert in the first place? By watching CNN Polls? I've seen some of these experts and I could be an expert if I weren't so conservative and honest in my opinions!

This is excellent news! Maria Cantwell has lukewarm support from the moonbat left, while conservatives find Mike McGavick acceptable, if not ideal.
I've read that McGavick is running a good campaign, with very well-crafted TV ads. He seems to be taking a page out of Dino Rossi's playbook, and it's paying off.

I'm surprised this one has narrowed so much. I hadn't thought the Washington senate race would amount to much.
I'm not, they keep electing Murray, McDermott and Sims.
Until then I will continue to vote but have zero confidence of the system in place.

Will do, remember that the Libertarians ran a lesbian in the last governor's race, that was the only thing that made it such a close race. If all of her vote had gone to Gregoire, we wouldn't have had a suspicious recount (and the bad taste it left in everyone's mouth), it would have just been another typical Rat winning statewide office.
While I'm no fan of Cantwell, She's not even a close second in the loserville category compared to Murray.
Hopefully, the Washington state Republicans will make getting out the vote a top priority. With so many races headed south, we need any pick-up we can get.

I mean, it really blows my mind how some people voted for Bush and Murray, but by the numbers, that must have happened. And not in tiny numbers. Not huge numbers, but 2-3% of the population.
She has the people of the state bamboozled with her stupid, tired 'Mom in tennis shoes' schtick.
You are right that Cantwell is understandable but Murray isn't. I mean, I oppose Cantwell, but she's at least a reasonably accomplished, reasonably smart person. Neither can be said of Murray, but Washington loves her.
Go figure.
But she was running as a libertarian, who traditionally takes 2-1 votes away from Republicans.
We really can't say who she hurt. It could have swung either way.
Most of the people who ran Rossi's race are working for McGavick.
That's good.
I'll believe it when I see it, but McGavick's campaign really is coming alive.
It sure would be nice to have someone decent from here.
Well, Murray you are right on, but neither McDermott or Sims wouldm't stand a chance statewide.
How do I know? They've both tried, and both lost. McDermott ran for Governor in 1980 and blew a huge lead to lose (he tried to appear a lot less insane then he really is, and eventually, failed.), and Sims lost to Slade Gorton for Senate in 1994.
McDermott's district is the most overwhelmingly D district in the state, and King County is the most liberal county in the state. They aren't all like that.
The real problem Washington Republicans have is that they do poorly in the suburbs recently. When they have a candidate that can do well in the burbs, things get interesting (i.e. Rossi, Gorton, McKenna etc.)
