how long has this been going on. funny how so few nationally cared about this until they could b**** at bush for it... Not true. The debate, as such, has been going on here for years. Like most things, it's building a head of steam; speaking of which, when's the last time you saw a train wreck?

How about a system that makes businesses check the SS numbers of employees. This could be implemented with little time and money. Tracking the SSNs of the dead would have to be a big part of this. Otherwise they keep reincarnating as Mexicans.
To: TechnicalEcstacy
Uh..I think he made some of those proposals in his speech.

>>>>So after decades of border incursions by illegals under Democrat and Republican administrations, you expect GWB to have the problem solved in six months. After five years and four months in office, Bush has had plenty of time to resolve the issue and correct the immigration problem, if that was his objective. Obviously, that hasn't been his goal. Even after 9-11.

No, thats not it. From what I have gathered from most people posting here is that there seems to be alot of frustration. Frustration at the unwillingness of Rep. to really solve this thing. There are so many solutions that could be used, but they refuse. All of these proposals amount to dragging their feet.
I think I can speak for most people that are frustrated by this; we hope if we make enough noise, maybe Bush will finally get the message. By his speech tonight, I think he's only halfway there.

never witnessed an actual train wreck. bush couldn't deploy troops to louisiana after katrina because he can't legally do so. he had to ask permission. the governors of individual states govern those states executively. this is a mess, i think there should be a wall. the reason that it can't be fixed should be addressed in my opinion.

You know why? Because it's finally got national attention. What better time to b***h and complain than when we have their ATTENTION!!! That's why.

OK. So after over fifty years of inaction, you think he's had plenty of time to act and his time is up. I guess that means you think he's betrayed the country and doesn't really care about our security. Nice.
To: TechnicalEcstacy
i think there should be a wall. i just don't agree with the 'blame bush' scapegoat mentality. federal troops have very little legal ground inside this country when it comes to law enforcement issues

I'm very much afraid that Mr. Farah, as editor and CEO of WND, must take responsiblity for "Against a Fence" (WND, 15 May 2006) by "Vox Day". Young Mr. Day wrote:
...it took the Germans less than four years to rid themselves of 6 million Jews, many of whom spoke German and were fully integrated into German society, it couldn't possibly take more than eight years to deport 12 million illegal aliens, many of whom don't speak English and are not integrated into American society.
If Mr. Farrah is indicative of "responsible" conservative opinion on the immigration issue, then one is justified in seeing his website's position (and, by assumption, Mr. Farrah's) as unacceptable and unamerican. While I think the "anti-immigration" folks are sometimes oversimplistic in their analysis of the issue (they fail to take into account the huge impact U.S. corporate agriculture -- and the ways U.S. tax codes and laws... and subsidies ... favor agri-business over family farms leaving Mexican farmers bankrupt and forced to emigrate -- mostly to Mexico's cities, but also to the U.S.) and don't always think the issues through. I run a blog on Mexican cultural and political affairs -- and naturally, I don't see eye to eye with most of the opinions I see here. But, until I received two "comments" from bona-fied white supremacists and read that item in WND, I had assumed the people I disagreed with were respectable folks with whom I could disagree. Sorry, folks -- if this kind of thing is the best you can do, those of us who used to "repectfully" disagree have to see your position as morally bankrupt and represensible.

Farah: Nonsense. Laws are laws. Traditions are traditions. No one is duty bound to uphold traditions. The American people have the right to decide today they don't want any more immigration in this country legal or illegal. And the president has the duty to carry out their will and the law of the land. The president is not elected to interpret America's traditions and ensure they are upheld. He is the head of the executive branch of government and is honor bound to carry out and enforce laws. Period. Stop obfuscating. Stop confusing the issue, Mr. President. The American people are too smart for this. It's too late to pull the wool over their eyes on a crisis of your own making. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

never witnessed an actual train wreck. Keep your eyes open, this one's gonna be a doozie.
bush couldn't deploy troops to louisiana after katrina because he can't legally do so. he had to ask permission. the governors of individual states govern those states executively.
That's a bit of a straw man. Not that it's a big deal, but the guard can be federalized with the stroke of a pen.
this is a mess, i think there should be a wall. the reason that it can't be fixed should be addressed in my opinion.
That's the problem; it can be fixed. We the people know it, but our leaders would have us believe otherwise.

He's gonna hold business accountable? I missed that one. If it actually happens I think I'll fall down dead from surprise. Don't get me wrong, I WANT him to do the right thing. I'll gladly be wrong.
