I think that's why they need to toughen the test for English literacy--if you can't read English it's very difficult to function in the USA.

Well, we may as well give the keys to the front door of the Capitol to Nancy Pelosi because they're going to be hers in November. I am so disappointed I can't see straight. Bush completely failed to move the ball and gave NOTHING to his base. I won't abandon the party in November, but many will. This is the sorriest day of his presidency.

I voted for this man!!!!!!!!WHY!!!!!!!!!! Same reason I did. Twice.
And I would vote for him again.
Why?
I guess I am a "glass half-full" kinda guy.
Name anyone else then and now who might have done better under the circumstances (who is semi-sane).

obeying in part is not true Christianity
Actually, obeying in part IS true Christianity.
- 1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us
- 1 John 1:10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
- 1 John 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
- Romans 7: 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.
- Romans 7...For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
- Romans 4:7 "Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him."
- Eph 2:8 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
It is quite clear that Abraham and Lot (his nephew) were UNWELCOME Aliens in their sojourns. They had left their country in roughly Iraq, and they had traveled to Palestine. Many objected to their use of water and pasture.
- Ge 17:8 - The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God."
- Ge 19:9 - "Get out of our way," they replied. And they said, "This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them." They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
- Ge 21:23 - Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you are living as an alien the same kindness I have shown to you."
- Ge 23:4 - "I am an alien and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead."
- Ge 28:4 - May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham."

It was certainly good the W didn't use the "Fightin' Words" he's used in the recent past - vigilante, work no American will do...
Uhhhhmmm...
This program would match willing foreign workers with willing American employers for jobs Americans are not doing.
Words to that effect. A subtle change in wording.

At the rate they reproduce, 20 years is enough for 2 people to become 7 people. If you have two married couples, in 20 years you would have 16, with the oldest already becoming parents. If you have 10 million people, having 5 children each, that is 35 million without having any relatives come into this country.

The weak point in any of these programs is, that the illegals will not believe that this country will have the will to send them home EVER.

Hmmm...I guess that's when we'll be doing the next amnesty package. Another 20 years from now. This will be the LAST amnesty. Their massive numbers will dictate that an amnesty will never happen again.

At the same time, we are launching the most technologically advanced border security initiative in American history. We will construct high-tech fences in urban corridors, and build new patrol roads and barriers in rural areas. We will employ motion sensors
infrared cameras
and unmanned aerial vehicles to prevent illegal crossings. America has the best technology in the world and we will ensure that the Border Patrol has the technology they need to do their job and secure our border.
I am optomistic, but cautious. does this mean there will be a REAL "barrier" allong the entire border? (or just more of the vehicle barriers.
And temporary workers must return to their home country at the conclusion of their stay.
This I like. HOWEVER it is tempered with what is below. If the guest worker is a NON CONVERTABLE visa and is NOT connected to dealing with the 11 million (soon to be 100 million family included) it is a positive. The guest worker program should not be linked in any way to the illegals in this country unless they leave and apply to join it.
That middle ground recognizes that there are differences between an illegal immigrant who crossed the border recently and someone who has worked here for many years, and has a home, a family, and an otherwise clean record. I believe that illegal immigrants who have roots in our country and want to stay should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law
to pay their taxes
to learn English
and to work in a job for a number of years. People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law. What I have just described is not amnesty it is a way for those who have broken the law to pay their debt to society, and demonstrate the character that makes a good citizen.
This I don't like. If this is the REAL goal then THERE IS NO REASON TO CHANGE CURRENT LAW WHICH DOES PROVIDE FOR THIS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED. This is the law RIGHT NOW. No new law, no need to change. Illegals in the USA for ten years who have done exactly as described have the path for a hardship visa and a then after five years can apply for citizenship.
I would be more optomistic if this were clearly not linked to the guest worker visa. This is just being deliverd as an easing of the current law. I think the public would be more accepting if the current process was simply brought forward to the public.
The bottom line is this was a good day for the illegals.

I am voting to keep the Commie bastards out. Demorats are smelling blood and they want the Conservatives to be split. They know that if we are split that they will win. I remember the Socialism they started pushing as soon as they took power in the 90s. I never want to see that again.

Tancredo must be a RINO now. He likes the plan and the speech. That's funny. On O'Reilly he said he'd rather have no bill at all than what the President proposed. I just heard it again on the re-run and I see other FReepers quoting him on other threads. Where did you see Tancredo say he liked it?

Here, in my opinion, is one critical paragraph:
"I believe that illegal immigrants who have roots in our country and want to stay should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law
to pay their taxes
to learn English
and to work in a job for a number of years. People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law. What I have just described is not amnesty it is a way for those who have broken the law to pay their debt to society, and demonstrate the character that makes a good citizen."
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any retroactivity to any of it - - no penalty.
That makes it amnesty.
To: potlatch
Thanks for sending me the speech. I'll reread it to see where it says the current illegal immigrants can have a path to eventual citizenship, AFTER the poor souls who have been waiting for many years to enter legally. Maybe it's there. I'll look. Now, off to check my "pings" ;-)
To: do the dhue
I am not thrilled with this contents of this speech but I am (surpisingly) not totally disappointed.
I see enough wiggle room there to allow for the base to have the ability to have the amendments we want and still keep the left disapointed. (ie kick out the increase in the family importees, kick out the restoration of anchor babies, kick out the dream act, put in a full "barrier")
I will be voting republican in the fall. That has not changed during the entire immigration debate.

Apprently you did not read that illegals are subject to the laws. An illegal alien is not a Ger. And yes, I am familiar with grace.
