All immigrant groups, both legal and illegal, have lived in their own ghettos, where English was hardly spoken; if at all. Many, from the first Irish ones, on down, lived in stinking slums! They did so, because they couldn't afford anything better. Did past foreign born peoples turn America into a "Third World" nation? Did they ruin American "culture"?

The Irish, in Manhattan, were used by and used Tammany Hall to keep Manhattan a Liberal Dem strong hold, for more than a century. Still, even with all of the payoff, thuggery, and worse, there have been GOPers elected Mayor and no, not all of these were squishy Liberal Republicans.

Look, a whole LOT of the problems with and created by illegals, are actually the fault of local communities and states. And California's problems have been legion, even before the 1986 Blanket Amnesty. And nobody, NOBODY took these problems on, on the local level, when it was less pervasive.

Actually, in the sixties 40-50 illegals were being deported to Mexicali from Monterey county each and every day. The Sheriff's department rounded them up, kept them one night and delivered them to the airport for shipment.

You are deep in denial when you compare the present-day illegal immigrants with those who came to our shores from 1840 to 1920. First, these immigrants came here legally and abided by the law. Second, there were few, if any, government run social services, and those few that existed were entirely run by local governments. In some cases, as with the public schools in Boston and New York, the Irish immigrants avoided them because of their anti-Catholic bias. Third, the 1840-1920 immigration was not strictly an urban phenomenon. Millions of immigrants, especially Germans and Scandinavians, helped settle the Plains states through homesteading and also helped populate the Rocky Mountain West. Giants in the Earth is as much a story of immigrants and their children as is the Studs Lonigan trilogy. Fourth, the European immigrants essentially cut ties with their native countries upon crossing the Atlantic. Their homelands were thousands of miles away, a considerable distance and expense in the days of steamship travel and even more so (including a greater danger factor) when ships were wind powered.

The most important factor is the desire not to assimilate. Bilingual education, social services information in Spanish, and extensive Spanish language TV and radio networks enable Hispanics to remain monolingual. The political culture enables the desire to self-isolate whereas a century ago, the political leadership condemned hypehenated-Americanism and insisted upon an English-only public arena. Augmenting the population of Hispanics are tens of millions in Mexico and Central and South America, not far off Europe.

The proposals made by the President are insufficient to control the continued rapid increase in the Hispanic population through illegal immigration. As a result, Hispanic majorities will develop in the Southwest, just as the Albanians came to dominate the Serbian province of Kosovo.

If you are still in denial, I advise you take Interstate 95 south to the Bronx and see what will be the future for large swaths of America, including your own state of Connecticut, unless illegal immigration is stopped.
