I understood the President to say that there would be 6,000 initially and reduced, not eliminated, at the end of one year. At the same time the Border Patrol would be beefed up. I see no problem with that, assuming that is enough bodies.
It takes two years to train border patrol agents, unless you want the standards lowered so that illiterate Mexicans can do the job.
Unless you end the pull from "illegal" employers here, you can seal the border and they will just come by plane on a tourist visa and never leave.
The border is secondary to eliminating the domestic financial support line here for illegals. They will not stay if they cannot work.
