President's Immigration speech - Live thread
me | 05/15/2006 | me

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim

"It appears that the Administration has begun to understand the breadth and depth of frustration with our open borders, and I welcome the President’s support of increased enforcement. But if the President thinks by taking one step forward with enforcement the House will follow him two steps backwards with amnesty, he’s confusing us with the Senate. The American people understand that blanket amnesty is not a pre-requisite for border security." - Tom Tancredo

Brilliant!

God bless him.

I don't have the energy tonight to go back and read the posts about Allen's position vis a vis guns, but he did support the so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" until a couple years ago when the political winds changed.

I have been working on my family tree.

From just my own maternal great-great-great-great grandparents alone I have identified over 250 families - not individuals but families - among their current descendants and I am missing many individuals and potential families along the way.

I can easily see how in spite of past levels of immigration, most Americans are related to those who arrived before immigration started increasing in any major way.

Here in So. Cal we call that Squat and drop citizenship

What the hell is the reasoning behind this? I've always wondered how all these legal Mexicans that I encounter who claim to have been born here got their citizenship. I'm sure there's no stats for something like that but it's another give-away freebie that you can't blame them for using.

"George Allen support the idea of mandatory trigger locks...I believe he also supports the 'assault weapons ban'...But even so, he could get their endorsement..."

The "insult" weapons ban is dead, over, done.

Allen gets good ratings on 2nd amendment issues by all the groups that track those things.

Allen will win in 2008.

Well that's funny because my first few posts I said "speech", as is in the dictionary, and some mouthy gal jumped on me correcting me saying it was "speach",

How odd to change what can so easily be looked up.

My local news just reported that a new tunnel from Mexico near the San Ysidro border has been found. Maybe they came over to hear the Presidents speech and find out how long til they get their citizenship papers.

I read that report this morning. To say the least, in short review the Heritage study has some major problems and seem to be bordering on hysteria. However, I am awaiting some commentary on that study so I will withhold final judgment.

The big problems I saw were.
They assume or at least don't make clear the whole green card issue. There seems to be some logic that everyone that gets a green card is going to stay here till they are put 6 feet under. That is nonsense

The Study seems incredibly wrong or probably does not consider the demographics and birthrates of Latino' as well as Asians. It fact Latino birthrates(abroad and here thanks to evils of birth control) are plummeting and in fact are about the same as in the USA. Furthermore the median age in Mexico will be far older than here in not to the far distance future.

Also, for some reason, it expects this economy to go gangbusters over the next 50 years. No talk of recessions, or economic downturns in the Universe of the Heritage Foundation it seems. Needless to say if Economic activity goes down migration goes down.

I though the report was well done in what they are trying to achieve. It works off some basic assumptions that Americans have. We believe that we have the greatest Country in the World and that the whole world would flock here and become citizens if they could. In fact many do. However many of the folks mentioned in that article are just as happy to work and then go back home for extended periods of time. Why? Because its home

I am anxious to see this report analyzed more. Perhaps I am wrong in my objections to it. However, I suspect it will one of a hundred studies we will see that never will be seriously analyzed in confusion of all these groups unleashing them at the same time.

Isn't LA and/or some of the surrounding municipalities ones that passed a law that didn't allow the police to ask if someone was legal or not and to not help in enforcing Fed immigration laws?

Yep, it's called a "sanctuary" policy. The MECHA Mayor Villaraigosa loves it, and it attracts illegals like flies to you-know-what.

Hmmm. I notice he doesn't have anything under "related records" on his "guns" page. Gonna have to keep an eye on that boy. Plenty of time for that. I'm not one of the flibberty gibitz that's worried about an election six months away much less two years. The only here-and-now issue that the people can really influence is this one. Immigration and borders. And our influence is somewhere between zilch and zero.

Just for the record, I remembering Bush warning Congress that if they passed the hot potato to him on CFR not to count on him to veto it. He told them they had to vote responsibly and not expect him to veto it and take the heat.

So, you'll have to cite your source for claiming he said he would veto it, as I believe you have your facts wrong here.
