I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.
Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

As a resident of California I'm disappointed. I'm happy he's sending troops, though I think the number is low.
I'm beside myself that these people basically get a free pass for already being here. Hello, isn't that rewarding criminal behavior? Now, I understand the reality of the situation but it would be an easier pill to swallow if he said we are shutting down the borders AIR TIGHT and then applied the "free pass".
I could live with that much more.
I haven't seen anyone seriously advocating mass roundups.
I agree, President Bush will go down as a great President! I think the speach was good and a well rounded approach.
If you do not vote again, you are an UN-AMERICAN piece of crap whose opinion is more worthless than Ted Kennedy.
Soldiers died for your right to vote.
No real 'conservative' does not vote.
And the vast majority of Mexican Americans in this country qualify the same way. Many of the families were here before the Mayflower even launched.
Show me the law that says that.
Orang County is almost as bad and It will be even worse now.
Interesting point. I bet we see numbers in the low 20's.
Thanks Palladin. I've even seen us compared to Palistinians here, not to mention the oft-used stereotypes on any thread concerning American Indians. It gets old.
There was no middle ground in the speech...
It's not amnesty because there's no automatic citizenship...The penalty is you have to wait your turn...Ofcourse you can stay here and collect welfare, or work or whatever...So, it's not amnesty...(chuckle)
I don't know you tell me.
You should be very pleased with Bush's speech..congratulations..

Long time, no si~!
ooops...I mean see.
OK, what a trip.
I believe the President just wants to get his bill passed no matter what. Border patrol - National Guard - = smokescreen. Did anyone other than me detect that he said that the National Guard would be deplyed "in the vicinity" of the border.
This could mean bases in TX, NM, AZ, etc. They will not be armed. They will help build some fences. OK.
And, only (1) year. and only (6000) guard. They will stand down as border patrol are added.
Why don't we just add border patrol now, and as well.??? What's the delay?
The rest of the speech his demeanor changed from just passively reading the teleprompter to actually passionate when he pitched the guest worker stuff. This is what really he wants.
I have to wonder what the conversation was with Vicente Fox when he called alarmed over the reports of the Guard on the border. Anyone want to posit what the conversation was????
"Are you foaming at the mouth?"
Almost. If the speech would have gone on any longer, I would have been. Guess your comment means you swallowed it whole, didn't you.
Larry Elder(black conservative talk show host) has opined that: "it's too little, to late...(and) we need more like 60,000 new agents on the border".
He also said(I paraphrase)that Bush is in fact, offering --by definition -- amnesty
Forget deportation trains! Fine the employers and even jail a few! When the jobs dry up, the illegals will deport themselves.
I've gone from disappointed to disgusted to feeling like we've been sold down the river.
"I was under the impression that you HAD to be a US citizen in order to serve in our armed forces."
Amazingly, you don't! I knew this before, but it still surprises me. Of course it can HELP you become a citizen, but I didn't understand the part where he said the man had helped defend America for 26 years, I mean how old is this guy? Has he been in the Marines for 26 years and never became a citizen? I think that part got messed up, it was very unclear.
