Shades of bill clinton's 100,000 police on the road.
How many does this mean in real feet on the boarder?
Will they be armed? no If armed no bullets.
This is smoke and mirrors.

More smoke and mirrors.
The White House PR team is just a bunch of fools to think this is going to help their cause with the base. Way to go Karl Rove & Co. You are showing why you should have gone back to Texas the minute Bush won reelection in Nov 2004. Everything else has been a disaster, PR wise since then.
Unarmed Guardsmen? Mexico will be laughing at us even more tonight.

This is a weak attempt at pacifying you troublesome conservatives so that he can slip through an Amnesty.

QUAGMIRE!!!!!!!!!LOL. But on a serious note, no guardsman I know would enjoy a 6 month deployment in the deserts of Texas.

The border is about 1950 miles in length. That equals out to 10,296,000 feet. Divide that by 5,000, and you're looking at one guardsman every 2,059 feet. Roughly one every half-mile.

The President isn't building any "fences" with this approach. We need a minimum of 50,000 troops assigned to duty on both the Mex and Canada borders.
An actual wall should immediately be approved along the southern border by those dunderheads in D.C. with construction started in a few days following. We might even arrest the wetbacks already here, form chain gangs and let them erect the wall, working on the Mexican side of it.

5000 troops ain't much of a political bone to throw at those the Republican Party needs to engage in order to maintain their majorities.

I guess its an issue of how many are needed to secure the border/mile. Counting the border patrol agents, this will come to about 4/mile. It should atleast be 10/mile. Then there is the small math of guarding the border round the clock, pushing up the figure to 30/mile. So we are talking some serious numbers here if the route we take is to secure the border by putting up troops there.
