May 15, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In his live, nationally televised address tonight, President Bush will tell Americans that it's impossible to deport the estimated 11 million illegal aliens living here.
"We must reject amnesty, but recognize that it is not realistic to round up millions of people and send them home," said White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri in a preview of Bush's speech.
She said Bush plans to spell out his vision for sealing the border, enforcing the law, and "creating a rational system for workers to come into our country and to do jobs Americans won't do." Bush plans to visit the U.S.-Mexican border this week, and will dispatch his Cabinet to help sell the immigration plan.
The Senate plans to return to the contentious issue this week now that Republicans and Democrats have a deal to plow through controversial amendments. But the House and Senate are far apart on whether to put illegals on a path to citizenship.
Tamburri said Bush would call for "better equipment, increased funding, and advanced technology" to secure the border.
She didn't confirm press reports that Bush wants to expand deployments of National Guard Troops to step up border enforcement. Some Guard troops are already deployed in Arizona and New Mexico, but Bush is considering a big increase.
White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said that enforcement was the Border Patrol's job - but then asked whether they needed help from the Guard on an "interim basis."
"This is not about militarizing the border," he said. The president is looking to do everything he can to secure the border. It's what the American people want."

It's not realistic to put men on the moon.
It's not realistic to expect us to defeat Germany, Japan AND Italy.
It's not realistic to defeat the USSR in this Cold War.
It's not realistic to dig a canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific, it's too hard.
It's not realistic to build a railroad from coast to coast, it's just too hard.
Maybe if the politicians had not sat on their hands the past 20-30 years it wouldn't be so hard. How about this --- earn your dang money and get the job done!!
Why do you oppose the rule of law?
"Snow is, and always has been, right in line with the Administration on this issue. Snow decried building a wall, etc., and has advocated open borders."
Exactly. I used to listen to his radio show. He said he was in line with Bush on the immigration issue. When I brought that up to the 'snow followers' they acted as if I had physically ripped their little rose colored glasses from their noses. They grabbed them back and put them in place before they actually saw the reality they fight so hard to deny.
So in other words, they get a de facto amnesty.
Pure doublespeak.
Why do you still beat your spouse?
Why don't you ask your hero tom tancredo, who didn't follow the letter of the law when he built his basement theater in his house in Colorado.
I could really care less if tom tancredo wishes to do home improvements, I do care when he is being a hypocrite about it and demagouging it.
Actually it makes a ton of sense.
...soooo...WTH is happening here? Is Fox such a formidable player that he has W. sweating? Or is their some kind of Rovian ace-in-the-hole we don't know about yet? That's what has me concerned. That Fox has just looked at his hand, smiled, bit the worm in half, and let the tequila trickle down his chin. While W. has turned up his final card, the Old Maid (oooops), and beads of sweat are beginning to form.
Response: Translation: My fellow Americans-You are screwed!"
You made the assertion. You have the burdemn of proof.
Submit your evidence. I won't hold my breath.
I'm glad the leaders of the US and Britain didn't decide it was not realistic to deport the Nazis from Europe and the Japanese from the Western Pacific.
If it turns out the other way, though, and he's really just determined to give this country away one way or the other, I'd rather just be done with it quickly.
I can live with amnesty for some of the illegals, perhaps even most, however, I would say that in addition to those things I stated above, the following must be accomplished:
1. Seal the border;
2. Tax money transfers;
3. Have background checks from both countries.
My biggest concern is that they are going to do amensty without enforcement, as has been done in the past.
Awwwww, Shucks. *sniffle*
Well, I'll just have to try harder next time then.
Which would give rise to chip implants.
Dane, if employers hire foreign illegal labor, shouldn't they also pay the excess social cost associated with the illegal being in the U.S.? Or are you okay with the taxpayers paying for it?
Many don't. Some do.
You'll enjoy this letter to the editor (today's San Antonio Express-News) by a citizen responding to one of Victor Landa's columns:
In Victor Landa's column "Immigrant debate drowning in bile" (May 7), he states that "immigrants," not illegal immigrants, pay taxes.
Of course they do, just like Landa or any other person pays taxes when he visits another country like Spain, France or Egypt and stays in a hotel, eats a meal or buys a bottle of wine. But that does not make him a citizen of that country.
And he puts himself on the spot when he accurately states that these people pay into the Social Security system with, his exact words, "their false numbers" with no chance of ever getting any benefits.
This is like me stealing my neighbor's MasterCard that pays cash rebates and complaining to my neighbor that I should get the rebates because I did all the spending on his card.

I would respectfully disagree - most employers employ illegals because it's a reverse arms race - to the bottom of the wage scale. If they can't competitively bid contracts, then they don't get the jobs.
No, I think some of the pro-illegals are political functionaries in various levels of Fed/State/Local governments. To paraphrase Franklin in terms of GOP stalwarts: "We must all hang together (with Bush), or assuredly we shall all hang separately (have to get a new job)".
