Sleeping giant of American politics continues its siesta

The day after one of the big pro-immigrant marches, a woman sat on a bench chatting about the event on her cell phone. She was recapping in Spanish, but switched to English to quote its key slogan: "Today we march, tomorrow we vote."

Many commentators have taken the marchers at their word, believing that the congressional debate over immigration has finally roused Latinos to become more engaged in the political process. But there's reason to suspect that Latinos -- long considered the "sleeping giant" of American politics -- may yet continue to slumber.

Latinos have never voted at the same rate as Anglos or blacks. Latinos cast just 6 percent of the ballots in 2004 -- even though a year earlier they had surpassed African Americans as the nation's leading minority group. (Blacks cast 11 percent of that year's votes.)

"The sleeping giant may have a sleeping sickness," says Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "Occasionally, he rolls over and yawns, and looks like he's waking, but it's going to be a long time before Hispanic turnout approaches that of other groups."

There's certainly precedent for Latinos suddenly to take a more-active interest in politics and government. It happened in California after the 1994 passage of Proposition 187 (later overturned), which denied illegal immigrants access to most government services. About a million immigrants quickly signed up to become citizens after the election.

this one can go either way. the law abiding citizens cannot possibly respect the criminals coming here and giving them a bad reputation for being mexican. on the other hand it seems eerily similar to the "peaceful muslims" that no one seems to be able to identify on a meaningful scale.

It won't be long before the anchor babies are elligible to vote. Do you think they are going to vote for or against freebies for mom and dad and amnesty candidates? It's only a matter of time.

You know Freepers, by Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution of the United States, it is Congress and Congress alone that has to straighten out the Naturalization Rules regarding Immigration and all of the procedures in order to apply for Naturalization. It would seem to me that the will of the people is fairly obvious, illegal marchers not withstanding. Yet all I see is vacillation, procrastination, and subterfuge. No one, meaning Congress, seems willing to actually do something, anything—other than spend our money of course.

The REAL sleeping giant of American politics is the majority of Americans. Even a large minority group suddenly looks tiny when something ticks off the majority.

All the coalition-building scenarios of politicians and pundits are based on the assumption that the majority will remain permanently split more or less down the middle.

Congress, almost to man, has seen the demographics. They know the hispanic population is exploding. Rather than take action to preserve or at least control the rate of change in this countries population and culture, they have chosen to run as fast as they can at any cost to pander for future votes.

With very few exeptions and regardless of party our reps have abandoned us and their duty.

With congress & The catholic church enabling them they will flood the polls in november, all displaying drivers licenses or state id's, daring us to challenge their "citizenship".

They will effectively take / nullify the elections in at least california by voting illegally or by overwhelming and shutting the polls down by shear weight.

[ About a million immigrants quickly signed up to become citizens after the election. ]

Secret is you do NOT need to prove citzenship to register to vote.. (most places)..
Because of that 2006 and 2008 will be an election ZOO..
And republican officals could care LESS..(i.e. White RINO House)

Looks like they pretty much rule already in California. They aren't doing a particularly good job of governing, either.

Once again that peculiar word "Anglo." Personally, I can't wait until Jorge's new 'Mericans take their family values to the polls and vote the Republican party into oblivion, just to see the looks on the faces of all those who think the only important consideration in immigration policy is cheap labor.
