A majority of people who moved out of Massachusetts last year report they are very satisfied with life in their new state and would not move back, a Boston Globe poll has found.
Seventy-three percent of those surveyed said they live in a home that is bigger than their home in Massachusetts was. Fifty-four percent said their standard of living is higher now.
The top reason people gave for leaving Massachusetts was a better job, followed by the cost of housing, family ties, and the weather. In a separate set of questions, 50 percent of those surveyed said the cost of housing was a ''major factor," and a better job was cited as a ''major factor" by 39 percent...
The survey comes as candidates for governor and policy makers are discussing the state's stagnant population, and identifies some of the aspects where Massachusetts faces a competitive disadvantage with other states.
''It points out that people are not being dragged away from Massachusetts kicking and screaming...I see so many people who move from Massachusetts and say they will never move back."
...The exodus from Massachusetts has been particularly acute in recent years. Between 2000 and 2004, Massachusetts lost residents at a greater rate than any other state except New York, according to Census Bureau estimates that were released last month. The exodus from Massachusetts averaged 42,402 people per year, according to the Census data.
...A majority -- 69 percent -- said they found Bay State residents either ''much less courteous" or ''somewhat less courteous" than people in their new state.
Some allegiances persisted, the results showed. Only 5 percent of those polled said they were now cheering for a different sports team.

He is right about New York also. If you go across the Southern tier of New York State, there are huge areas where very few people live.
That's what happens when you live in a one-party state. Unlike the national scene, though, it's always the same party here.
When folks around here talk about evil Republicans I just laugh and ask how many members of the family are on the state or Boston city payroll.
Massachusetts doesn't deserve being called Taxachusetts as much as it should be called Hackachusetts.
As part of any immigration compromise, an adjustment in congressional representation to exclude illegal aliens and mid-decade population shifts of legal residents should be required.
I was born and raised in Boston and still think it's the most beautiful city in the world. I say that having lived in Europe and , pretty much, all over the country. I also think that if God were going to live down here, He just might pick the White Mountains...
Having said that, I can't imagine any reason why I would EVER move back there. The taxes, the politics, the "university corridor" from Boston to Worcester to Springfield that has turned a beautiful state into a failing socialist "utopia", the Kennedys, just to name a few problems. And these problems have leaked their corrosion into the other NE states.
All of those who rapidly support the Kennedys in Mass. can thank them for the wonderful state they are in which supports higher cost of living of everything priced to keep the rich rich(namely the Kennedys) and the poor poorer. Maybe you will wake up and see how much damage the Kennedys in their little fiefdom have really done. It's all about them, guys; not you. You will only get the scraps and only if you beg and bow enough times.
Oops, that's rabidly support the Kennedys.

I guess I'm an exception to the rule. I too was born and raised in Boston, but after seeing the world, decided to move back home. Home is home you know?
I lived in Europe for 4 years (Germany), been everywhere over there. The military has been kind enough to deploy me to many shit holes, currentrly I'm in Iraq. But the military also sent me to San Francisco, for me the most beautiful city in the world. And Yes, yes, yes, politics aside. Boston is a close second
I lived in Kentucky for 3 years, beautiful state. I was up on the Ohio border working for Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati. Great little city.
But I have to admit, I never once thought I wouldn't move back home. I now live in Charlestown, about 200 yards from the Bunker Hill Monument. I love my city, warts and all. It's tough being a Republican here for sure, but hey I get to be on the front lines.
Yes, it's expensive. My wife and I make over $200K combined, and we couldn't live in the city without that scratch. But hey, I won't apologize. I own my own business and work hard. I'm also a pilot in the National Guard (that's why I'm in Iraq).
The bottom line, I wish people didn't shit all over massachusetts as a whole. I know as a prior resident you know what I mean. There are many great people here. Some day all the Kennedys will be dead.
And not for nothing, it's the best sports-town in the world. Sox, Pats, celts, and Bruins. Can't top that.

Rapidly, Rabidly--It's all OK. Just as long as it is not "RABITly" supports the Kenndys. We wouldn't want to scare Jimmah Carter away from visiting his favorite NE state.
Boston's a great city to visit.
I don't know if it's liberals leaving the state,it's probably the final remnant of reasonable folks who tried to hang on to homes and family farms,but just couldn't take any more abuse.Pretty ironic in a state that was the cradle of the American revolution.
At some point, it clicks that all that tax money is going to hire other people's relatives who could not get a real job.
