Issues & Insights Snow Stirs It Up Posted 5/12/2006
The Media: When President Bush introduced his new spokesman, Tony Snow warmly told the White House press corps he wanted to offer help. Surprise! The doctor started by writing prescriptions.
... he wasted no time handing out giant horse pills. It's a joy to watch our journalistic brothers and sisters struggle to swallow them.
The stiff dosages come as e-mails, reports The Washington Examiner's Bill Sammon: "Since starting his job, Snow has challenged five major news outlets in a clear signal that he will be more aggressive than his mild-mannered predecessor, Scott McClellan."
This past week Snow challenged the factual basis of five major media reports: The New York Times, The Associated Press, CBS News, The Washington Post and USA Today. Rather than take individual reporters aside and gently set them straight, he sent e-mails to the entire press corps.
If that seems rude for the unfailingly polite Snow, it strikes us as the perfect first step toward stopping a contagion of misinformation. Consider:
"The New York Times continues to ignore America's economic progress," began one e-mail, which conveyed positive indicators about the economy.
Then: "CBS News misleadingly reports that only 8 million seniors have signed up for Medicare prescription drug coverage. But 37 million seniors have coverage."...
Funny, too, but Mike McCurry, President Clinton's able spokesman, offered similar corrections. Few protested then, maybe because McCurry's corrections fit the accepted ideological template.

We know where Tony picked up all that expertise, don't we now.
:O)
Go Tony!
Do I detect a breath of fresh air coming from the White House? Go, Tony, go!
A Freeper White House Press Secretary. How cool is that?
I'll buy a ticket.
LMAO !!!!!
Only a journalist could consider a correction, with facts, as manipulation of what they can write or broadcast!
I thought Axelrod's name was "Jim".
He does.
I remember talking to a friend about AOL chat rooms, and she said Tony Snow was in the political chats years before the word or the concept of "blog" was even on the radar screen.
Snow described Snow as smart and tough. She also said watching him on TV was very "easy on the eyes", but I will leave that to to the females.
He worked in the the "Bush 41" White House, and carried that expertise over to FOX News. Moreover, when he used to sub for Rush Limbaugh, he was one of the few guest hosts who wasn't dwarfed by him. With all due respect to the rest of the guest hosts, most of them paled in comparison (except Snow).
Now he is taking the MSM head on.
I have worked with media when I was in the military. They have a job to do, and it is a very important one. But I can think of no other profession where there is such of lack of accountability as today's mainstream media. The article is correct - editing has become nothing more than a wink over the flat screen from your fellow liberal.
This has to change. The "blogs" and alternative media are holding their feet to the fire more, but Snow and the White House must take the lead.
He's causing quite a stir in the media, isn't he? :)
Glad this point was made. Interesting that this is one of the MSM's main complaints about the blogosphere is actually the MSM's biggest problem (just the fax mam, but never the facts) and one of the new media's biggest strengths.
I'm quite pleased to read this, SE Mom. Thanks for the ping. It's past due the WH try a new strategy.
Roger Hedgecock is pretty good too and Walter E Williams is quite funny while staying on task.
clearly this is a shot across the bow ... the entire press corps is now on notice that their lies, distortions, spins, etc. will not go by without official notice and correction ... good on Tony!
BTTT!
What would really blow their minds would be if Tony Snow started his own official blog where he rakes journalists over the coals for sloppy and inaccurate reporting. With links to the real facts, for all the world to see
Snow will be reporting to the media, right?
Will he bring the truth to the public, and the press on the lies of the liberal congress and, the liberal lying senators?
Also, I hope he will bring to the public, the lying RINOS of
both houses.
Snow can, and will help the White House, now if there could be other changes within the administration.
This is great news--- Snow is awesome! I just hope when he has the actual conferrence he takes the Mr. Stick Figure approach! http://wuzzadem.typepad.com/wuz/2005/11/mcclellen_out_m.html
