A Purge has been conducted on the FSB, MVD Prosecutors Office, Customs and the Federation Council.
On Friday the Prime Minister was directed by the Russian president to order the forced retirements and firing of high ranking members of the FSB, MVD Prosecutors and Customs office and the Federal Customs Service. Federation Council members were also told to step down.
These retirements were conducted in accordance with the governments anti-corruption campaign. A government source told Interfax that this action was not a witch hunt, but was conducted in order to counteract the criminal elements that have taken hold in the power ministries.

Interesting news out of Russia. This is obviously a follow-up to the raid on the Customs officials last week. This time high-ranking FSB, the MVD (Interior Ministry) prosecutor's office and customs office, the Federal Customs Agency, and members of the Federation Council have been removed from office. This was all done in the battle against corruption.
If they've got the right people this is a step in the right direction. HOWEVER, you'll note that the Ministry of Defense and the Defense Industries remain untouched. In my opinion, Putin still doesn't have enough clout to go after the real big boys at MOD and in the defense industry.
PING!
Any idea on names at MOD and Russian defense industry?
"A new "Purge" in Russia - High ranking officials fired for corruption"
What ? Having a lack of it ?
Names of corrupt guys?
LOL
Other big news from Russia today was Putin telling Lukashenko that the welfare days are over and the Belarusians will have to start paying considerably more for gas and other products (This was done to force Lukashenko's hand on the "unification" - he's been stonewalling).
Any names...corruption always a consideration. :)
Putin kills two birds with one stone.
1) Put on a dog and pony show that Russia isn't using energy to thug Europe after what Cheney said and the G8 summit coming up.
2) Push Belarus to join mother Russia.

"1) Put on a dog and pony show that Russia isn't using energy to thug Europe after what Cheney said and the G8 summit coming up."
Actually this move will cause more criticism and instability in the gas prices since Belarus has been selling most of what it got from Russia (on the cheap) to Europe.
2. That's the stated and already ratified and signed goal of the Russian Federation/Republic of Belarus Council. The Russians are trying to get past Lukashenko's balking since Russia is footing the bill and getting nothing in return.
Plus, that's exactly what the Russians have stated is their main reason for the actions (And their stated goal of selling gas to all at market prices). So, no surprises really.
They were probably guilty of monitoring phone calls from foreign countries.
All I know, is judging from the number of scam attempts arriving in my email daily from Russia, they cleary have a criminal element that is not being addressed. Maybe this will fix it.
Good, the Belarussians will be a lot better off.
I'm trying to learn Russian. Audio book style.
If I ever get the hang of it, maybe I'll learn how to read it. We'll see. My French is really bad, and improving that is a chore.
Do you remember the words of reprimand to Derzhimorda? "Ne po chinu beryosh'!" = you take beyond your rank!
ping
"Ne po chinu beryosh'!"
Which is interesting to state in-light of the 2 and 3-star generals crushed in this - just how much "ne po chinu" would this be?
Or is it just better to yell that they need to crush corruption and then criticize them when they start to do it?
