I'm sorry for some reason I misread that it took place over three years. Still 3 months of repeated spanking sessions is extremely odd
Spanking? Paddling? Beating?
A news article in the Chicago Tribune--"Minister beat girl with stick, cops say"--indicates that there were welts and bruises on the girl's legs and buttocks!

You certainly are.
Try reading the story again in daylight.
Hint. The preacher was arrested for a misdemeanor (usual max 12 months, may vary in some jurisdictions.) The child molester is the one that faces 60 years.
"Still 3 months of repeated spanking sessions is extremely odd"
I agree, IF there is any truth to the article.
I might have missed it myself, if it weren't for the fact that I pay much closer attention to threads and posts concerning Christians.
The bashing of Christians in particular and religion in general, seems to be the norm these days.
I'm not saying the pastor is or isn't guilty.
I did notice though that title of the article makes the "spanking" by a pastor to be of more importance than the 2+ years of alledged sexual assault by the relative.
I also noticed that in the first sentence it is refered to as spanking, but in the second sentence it turns into "beating".
Two thirds of the article focuses on the pastor while one third focuses on the molestor.
If you review the comments, you will see that most of them focused on this as well.
Just making observations.

Lobo
60 years in prison for spanking?
We are messed up.
The years are a bit much and he won't get that, but I don't excuse what a Pastor did. I mean a 30 year old is spanking a 13 year old every Wednesday. That is disgusting. Why not go to the parents and give you opinion. I would beat the crap out of this guy for hitting my kid. He has no business hitting somebody. I find this situation very dirty.
This sorry excuse for a "pastor" should be thrown in jail.
There he will become the "bitch" for a "Big Bubba". That's justice!
Actually last year when she was twelve. Bur put him in prison anyway
Thanks, Hugh. I did read their statement of faith. However, the word at issue was not "fundamental" but "fundamentalist," a word the liberal media uses to suggest fanaticism but few churches would use to describe themselves.

I don't wish rape on anybody.
But forcibly spanking a child as punishment for reporting being abused is sick. And if was for the pastor's gratification its sicker.
What did Gore Vidal say "I'm all for bringing back the birch, but only between consenting adults."
A news article in the Chicago Tribune--"Minister beat girl with stick, cops say"--indicates that there were welts and bruises on the girl's legs and buttocks!
So let me get this straight, if it leaves welts and bruises it can't be called a spanking? Look up "spank" in the dictionary and you'll find no such exclusions. Hence, the distinction between *mild* spanking and *severe* spanking.
Note also that in the text of that article you cite, the more neutral term "discipline" is used.
I think the importance is not the spanking itself but that it was being used as a deterrent against making sex abuse allegations. Plus it's more of a curiosity in contrast to the molestation, which sad to say is fairly common almost to the level of "Dog bites man".
BuMp.
Sounds familiar. Chances are that, on the church's sign, the font size used for the "pastor's" name will equal or exceed that used for the church's name...
The molester was the one facing 60 years.
The pastor is messed up, yep. On the one hand we have churches where anything goes, and the saints get trampled by the world, so in the name of 'tolerance' the pastors allow it to happen... and on the other hand we have churches that are uber-authoritarian and abusive. God help us.
This girl is going to need a LOT of counseling...IF she'll trust it.
Let's see. Raped by a family member, betrayed by even MORE family members, forced to endure abuse by the hands of a "religious" figure...sheesh, it's literally going to take an act of God for this poor child not to turn her back on Him entirely, thanks to the actions of a bunch of self-serving hypocrites in denial.
As someone who endured "paddlings" in an evangelical school at the hands of a psycho principal, this story makes me want to puke.
Someone should post a pic of the Monty Python & The Holy Grail scene of the women in "Anthrax" castle talking to Sir Gallahad here.
