The pastor of an Elgin church repeatedly spanked a teenage girl with a 3-foot piece of wood to make her stop making sex abuse allegations against a family member, police said today.
The Rev. Daryl P. Bujak, 30, of Elgin, turned himself in to police Wednesday after authorities filed a misdemeanor battery charge against him stemming from the weekly beatings that occurred between March and May of 2005.
Police now believe the 13-year-old McHenry County girl was telling the truth when she claimed a relative, Matthew Resh, molested her.
Resh, 33, of Ingleside, was arrested this week on five counts of predatory criminal sexual assault alleging he abused the girl between September 2003 and November 2005.
Elgin police said that after the girl began making claims against Resh last year, her parents brought her to Bujak for counseling.
"He believed she was lying and recommended that she be disciplined by spanking," police Lt. Mike Turner said Thursday. "He set up a time she would come every Wednesday before services for a spanking."
The spankings, which took place during 45-minute sessions for a two- month period, were done with a 3-foot by two-inch piece of wood molding, police said.
Bujak, who is free after posting 10 percent of a $5,000 bond Wednesday, was not immediately available for comment Thursday. Turner said he refused to speak with investigators about the allegations.
According to its web site, First Missionary Baptist Church is a fundamentalist church unaffiliated with any Baptist organization. In a letter to visitors, Bujak describes his church as "one that cares about the lives of people."
Resh, a former plan commissioner for the McHenry County village of Richmond, is free after posting 10 percent of a $200,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court May 18. If found guilty, he could face up to 60 years in prison.

One has to wonder if he wasn't doing this to other adolescent girls. There is nothing more contemptible than perverts who use a religious guise to get their rocks off in their dealings with children. "Better for a millstone..." and all that.
That's one sick bastard. This creep never called the cops to check on the girl's welfare. Something stinks in this story. He's getting a pass here. He should be charged with a felony.
I searched the church's website for the word, "fundamentalist." Came up empty.

Agreed, intentional and malicious harm of a child, and/or the enabling of it, is probably the one unforgivable crime....DEATH would sit fine with me, I would also be supportive of torture in these cases.

We don't for sure but my instinct reading the story is that used his position as a minister as an excuse to spank a young girl who had already been molested - that's enough for prison... if the minister did it for sexual purposes then I'd support hanging (after a fair trial, of course).
"Spanking" with a three-foot plank of wood isn't spanking. It's beating. And the way it's described makes it sound fetishistic.
If the kid was making false abuse claims, she should have been referred to a pshrink. If there was a sliver of possibility that the allegations were true, they should have been referred to the authorities. Under no circumstances is it an appropriate response to have a preacher smack the girl with a piece of lumber at an appointed place and time.

We have a girl who was either being abused or emotionally disturbed enough to make false claims of abuse. We have a family that might be predisposed to disregard her claims, might be actively covering up, or might be innocent. We have a clergyman who might have been honestly trying to help, or might have been indulging his own weird idea of a good time.
A court will determine the answers to those questions, answers that are obscure at least in part because of active efforts to obscure the facts. There's a whole lot of ugly in this story, no matter how the chips fall.
Depending on the weight and other dimensions, this wouldn't necessarily be any more severe than a paddling.
In fact, the yard-stick length might actually make it harder to achieve the same velocity as a regular paddle.
I agree with you, if this preacher does end up in prison, he'll probably get spanked more ways then one, not to mention the other man too.

She was "molested" beginning in 2003, the spanking took place between March and May of 2005.
