A Chaotic White House Debut for Tony Snow
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 5-12-06 | Jennifer Loven

Posted on 05/12/2006 3:20:55 PM PDT by STARWISE

"It obviously at this point is just a mess," new White House press secretary Tony Snow said good naturedly, summing up his rocky first question-and-answer session with reporters.During 23 sometimes-chaotic minutes Friday with the White House press corps in his West Wing office, Snow offered a half-dozen apologies for a less-than-smooth debut, pleaded ignorance on seven questions and ruled out all talk of international or currency issues."I do not wish to set off global tempests," he said, "because I frankly just don't know enough on those."

(snip)

Snow is waiting until Tuesday to hold his first televised briefing, taking advantage of a week when Bush was on the road most days to practice with White House communication gurus and educate himself on a dizzying array of policy positions.

He scheduled his first Q&A for Friday, an off-camera morning session called the "gaggle" that is held most days as a warmup for the formal news briefing.

(snip)

A telegenic man who has built a reputation as a bright, unflappable broadcast presence, Snow remained relaxed, even self-deprecating, despite considerable grumbling. Asked what he wanted to do differently with the press operation, Snow joked: "Well, apparently, the gaggle."

"I had this wonderful idea that this would be nice and collegial and relaxed," he said with a smile.

Snow promised to move back to the more orderly venue of the briefing room, and look into the requests for information that he hadn't been able to supply. He sought to tamp out buzz that the midday briefing would stop being televised.

And, despite the problems, he showed he's a quick study on White House public relations strategy.

GO TONY!! I already sense a difference.

Anyone would be better than deer-in-the-headlights Scott McClellan. He was stunningly bad as Press Secretary.

"Great! Now all we've got to work on is that yellow wristband..."

I thought those wristbands had something to do with being a cancer survivor ?

Poor Tony.....

I am sure he wasn't nearly as bad a this report...but he is going to be in for the same thing as President Bush...everything being hypercritisized....

I still can't wait to see him on TV though.

Oh..I am sure he will...

Just think of all of the "stuff" he has to learn???

Those reporters come up with some very off the wall questions some time...and I BET they try to for a while just to embarrass him.

PLUS, the news is changing so fast, and it a all VERY contentious news...

BUT, he will be the best one Bush has ever had...

Tony should have a paint gun at his side to blow off a few paint balls at any reporter who asks moronic questions.

I feel the room would be paint spattered in mere moments.

It would get their attention to be on point with legitimate question that actually have more substance than, "can we catch bush in a lie"

As far as AP articles go, I'd call this a rave review.

They do; however, they go to Lance Armstrong's testicular cancer survival fund and he did some very bad things to some very kind and dear people who nursed him all through his weakness.

**He should hol[d} the gaggle outside, especially on broiling hot days. He can be under a tent while making the reporters stand in the sun.

LOL!
