AP NewsBreak: NJ lawyers sue Verizon for giving records to NSA By BETH DeFALCO, Associated Press Writer Published: Friday, May 12, 2006 Updated: Friday, May 12, 2006
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Two New Jersey public interest lawyers sued Verizon Communications Inc. for $5 billion Friday, claiming the phone carrier violated privacy laws by turning over phone records to the National Security Agency for a secret government surveillance program.
Attorneys Bruce Afran and Carl Mayer filed the lawsuit Friday afternoon in federal district court in Manhattan, where Verizon is headquartered.
The lawsuit asks the court to stop Verizon from turning over any more records to the NSA without a warrant or consent of the subscriber.
"This is the largest and most vast intrusion of civil liberties we've ever seen in the United States," Afran said of the NSA program.

Verizon will file a motion for summary judgement/dismissal which a SANE judge will grant.
We'll see.
Of course it is common everywhere else.
Well, when this is resolved hopefully the NSA will get data from Qwest, as well.
Good luck to them in getting around CALEA. I'm sure the lawyers know this...but their bank accounts will fare well.
Their purposes achieved, Afran & Mayer would be amongst the first to have their throats cut as islamists come to power.
It is interesting that with just a little encouragement, liberals can be trained to play right into conservatives' hands.
The new model Ferraris must have come out. Either that or a couple nice Swiss chalets have come up for sale. Regardless of what people say, we need "Loser Pays" in this country. BAD.

CORRUPTION-FIGHTING DUO TO CORZINE: NOT SO FAST
LAWSUIT FILED TO STOP APPOINTMENT OF SENATOR
CONSTITUTION DOES NOT GIVE GOV. APPOINTMENT POWER
Carl Mayer and Bruce Afran â the corruption-fighting legal duo who have uncovered and fought corruption and ethics violations in New Jersey government -- will hold a press conference announcing that they have filed a lawsuit asking a state court judge to bar Governor-elect Corzine, upon assumption of office, from appointing someone to fill the balance of his Senate term.
The dynamic corruption fighting duo will also ask a state court judge to enjoin any appointee selected by Governor-elect Corzine from taking office. Instead, Afran and Mayer â two public interest lawyers -- will ask a judge to direct the Governor to hold a special election or to leave the seat vacant until next Novemberâs election.
During WWII these lawyers would require immediate police protection.
Al Qaeda sure has a lot of lawyers.
And wasn't it on Rush today where he was reading in 94 Clintoon and the Dem controlled congress passed the legislation requiring the phone companies to turn over such records? Interesting....
..cept unless you discount 800 FBI files of prominent Americans stored ILLEGALLY in the White House during the 90's
Doogle
When it comes to telephones, I don't know why anyone would have any expectations regarding their privacy. You're picking up an electronic instrument and carrying on a conversation through a complex system of wires, connections, terminals, etc. that requires thousands of employees for its upkeep and maintenance.
Read this ... seriously.

BRUCE AFRAN FOR SENATE ! ! !
From the Candidate:
I stand for the progressive principles that have been gradually abandoned (and eroded) by the Democratic Party in the fields of environmental protection, anti-trust regulation, social justice and individual rights and liberties.
Ours will be a campaign opposed to the spread of the death penalty in the U.S. and the increasing diminishment of civil liberties in our criminal justice system. We will call for a national ban (not simply a moratorium) on the use of this barbaric penalty. We will campaign against the homogenization of American culture caused by the seemingly endless merger of corporate behemoths and the marketing exploitation of young Americans. We will highlight the diminished respect for learning and education permeating our society, fostered to a great extent by the low-grade entertainment
offered up by our media conglomerates.
We will end the War on Drugs, which has increasingly become a war against our children and has created a police state in many of our cities. We will demand a change in the growing merger of Hollywood and the organs of government and politics.
We will challenge the wisdom of unregulated trade with dictatorships of all stripes and demand that foreign governments respect human rights and the principles of due process if they are to profit by our commerce. We will demand meaningful reform in the repression perpetrated by China if that
government is to continue to benefit from our trade. A new call must go forth for the enhancement of the civil rights and equality of Americans of all backgrounds and to demand again the social justice that has receded from our politics.
This will be a campaign that will challenge the two-party system and provide the competition that has disappeared as the two major parties have moved toward a political monopoly. Please join with us in this effort to build a political structure that responds to the needs of citizens. Let us work to
create a public policy that answers to the public need. Together we can renew America's democratic spirit and the ideal of true political competition.
People are sensitive. Legal or not, they as conservatives know this smells of invasion of privacy, but it comes under a Bush Admin. So they overreact pointing at "liberals" and even "AQ".
Like with the Dubai Ports World deal. Bush's immigration policy is such a disaster it is ignored.
SOme years ago, I had a friend who was a technician for one of the major phone companies. One of his duties was to do random monitoring of line quality. He would simply tap into a random conversation and listen to determine that the connection was clear and free of noise
...as anyone knows...get an old scanner (programmible)..and listen to wireless phone calls all night long...cell phones
These two must suffer from lack of clients. Wonder what they have to hide?
