Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.

The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.

Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.

He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".

You are assuming that terrorists are rational. They aren't. They want to do theatrical things like 9/11, even when less dramatic attacks would be more militarily effective.

For instance, two guys operating as a sniper team pretty well shut down the DC area for several weeks a few years ago.

Imagine 50 sniper teams across America. Activate team 1 in DC today. Activate team 2 in LA tomorrow. Activate team 3 in Chicago the day after that. It wouldn't take long for panic to set in.

And all you need is 100 guys who can drive and shoot.

I meant antiwar with regard to Iraq, just like most people on this site were antiwar with regard to Kosovo. Gibson isn't a pacifist but he is against Wilsonian crusades to bring "liberty" to the every corner of the planet. Conservatives used to feel the same way when Clinton was in power.

First of all, to make this comparison is a slap in the face to all families and loved ones of 9/11 and all other attacks against innocents around the world.

Second, it's a weak attempt to bury your head in the sand, attempting to dismiss the death of innocent people as acceptable.

Third, and perhaps most disturbing, it attempts to excuse malice.

Katrina didn't plot, plan, rehearse and carry out the slaughter of innocent people, but the 9/11 terrorists did.

Simply put - It was no good. In general I like the story of Jesus, but this was torture to watch and not at all inspiring (of course I am agnostic). I really wanted to go to the movie to piss off the libs and stick it to Hollywood.

I think this whole thing has been a set up. Get the Christians on Mel's side, then let him blast Bush. Then people might say, "Even Gibson thinks Bush is bad, I guess I don't like Bush now."

Most actors aren't normal people. Think about it - what they do for a living - as adults - is pretend to be other people. You shouldn't look to actors or musicians as people to emulate or even admire. Just be glad that you're not them.

It might be helpful to have actual, agreed upon quotes from Mr. Gibson before we condemn him. If he actually said what is alleged, surely he needs to reflect on what and why he said what he did.

Presumably, Mr. Gibson's egregious insults surely were designed to do something. Insulting POTUS can always get you publicity; however, Mr. Gibson hardly needs to manipulate for attention.

More likely Mr. Gibson strives for both moral superiority and enduring respect and approval from those he considers meritorious. I guess Hollywood cronies and liberals are more important to him than anticipated.

If the comments are true, then, Mr. Gibson has manipulated for approval by besmirching POTUS. It Does not take much courage or intelligence to call a person names. So congratulations Mr. Gibson. You have told us more about you than you have about President Bush.

As you posted earlier, he is antiwar, and if I recall correctly, he is and always has been opposed to the liberation of Iraq! That tells me all I need to know about Mr. Gibson.

As for "fear-mongering," President Bush can't win. He was vilified for NOT preventing 9/11, yet if those would-be hijackers had been detained before getting on the planes, I can't even imagine what the ENEMEDIA and the DemocRats would have accused President Bush of!

President Bush IS NOT the enemy!
