Some of this may be Dubya's fault too, but even if Dubya wanted to be more aggressive, you still need legal change. Those conservatives who have dug their heels in on an all or nothing position based on the mistaken believe that we "only need to enforce the laws on the books" are just hurting their own cause.

We need some significant changes to the law to make enforcement practical, and that's going to take new legislation. And getting that new legislation is going to require some compromise. We just need to structure the compromise so that it makes the sitation better, not worse. That's entirely possible if people on our side are willing to bend a little. Because otherwise, its the status quo, which is intolerable.

You know that some of the people who organized those street rallies are the same ones who were active in 1968, and they are trying for a repeat. The spring and summer of 68 were the years when rioting burned down the inner cities. Could the Congress and President be trying to head off a long hot summer by working on this now?

"The beginning of the Tony Snow era"

Is Bush so inept and helpless that his administration has be to identified by his subordinates?

I hope the Snow job isn't just more of the same lame rhetoric.

Well the man has been behaving as if he's declared war on his own base.

Are you talking about GWB's base or Buchanan's? Most of the real screamers on immigration were never Bush supporters anyway...They voted against Gore and Kerry.

The President's stand on immigration is pretty much where it always has been.

I think it will be a major -- and satisfying speech to all conservatives.

I can think of no good reason to do this if not to attempt a reconciliation with conservatives.

It will be a tough sell, though.

Sorry, Penny, if you were better informed you would know that I am repeating testimony by Michael Chertoff. I suppose you consider everything from an imaginary perspective, That does not appeal to me.

Granted this is an AP article written by "Espo", but I would like to see what the text of the bill actually is without the AP spin on it.

WASHINGTON - After months of partisan maneuvering, Senate passage of sweeping immigration legislation is virtually assured by Memorial Day. But that scarcely ends the struggle in Congress, given the vast differences between President Bush and House Republicans over the fate of millions of illegal immigrants. The substance of the Senate bill is unlikely to change significantly from the measure that was stuck in gridlock more than a month ago. It includes additional border security, a new guest worker program and provisions opening the way to eventual citizenship for many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. What...

Could you source your information containing his speech? Thanks in advance.

The past is prologue. I have been reading and listening closely to what he has been putting forth as his position on comprehensive immigration reform. Unless he makes a radical departure from that position, I am fairly confident that his speech will include a guest worker program and a de facto amnesty program, which will be disguised as something else.

CNN just had a report which showed that 4 million illegals have overstayed their VISAs.

Speaking of current news, anyone think that this press conference is intended to stop the hemorrhaging of Bush's latest dip in the polls?

Only two things I want to hear, no amnesty of any kind and border security.

The American Chronicle article regarding the drop in employer sanctions is another one where 'the rest of the story' isn't told, specifically, why employer enforcement is down.

Another Clinton era law (INA 274B) made it illegal for employers to ask an employee if the information they provided is 'valid', instead, as long as the employer has an I9, valid information or not, they cannot be prosecuted because they are not responsible for validating the information on the I9.

Basically, if an employer questions an employee 'if they are legal' or if they are providing false ID, they could be sued for 'unfair employment practices'

Just one more thing that makes this situation far more complex than just "Bush's Fault".

Actually I would prefer to see 24, too. Only because the President is only going to be repeating himself for the dozenth time to those who are hard of hearing.

I will watch and listen to what the President has to say, but....

Don't mess with '24'!

It's the only show I watch on TV these days.

So how many demonstrators waving Mexican flags in your neighborhood have you seen in the last couple of months, demanding the return of your property to them? Assuming you own property that is.

Bush could secure the future of the republican party for the next 8 years if he comes out Monday night and tells us he's ordering the National Guard to the Southern Border, installing concertina wire fencing while a permanent border fence is studied, ordering the INS to begin aggressive enforcement of immigration workplace laws while details are worked out for a new immigration policy that requires illegals to go back to Mexico and register for work permits before they can reenter the US.
