Do they have to know English also?

Well, a seasoned serviceman ought to be able to curse and swear in at least ten languages.

Cool. My niece is an Arabic linguist in the USAF.

It doesn't matter. You can be a native speaker the Army will still send you to learn a different language. They never do things the easy way.

That actually was a problem, at least for the USAF, in the 90s when we opened up language pay to everyone. Native Spanish and Tagalog speakers were bankrupting us. Luckily we had some sane minds at work and the program was amended to specify that you had to be in linguist billet to receive the pay.

BTW, native speakers don't necessarily make the best linguists depending on the job.....

"Well you can have native fluency and max all aspects of testing, but just don't be a homo."

Funny you should say that - back in 1986 when I decided to leave the Army and join the AF as a Russian linguist my CWO said to me, "Why the hell do you want to go out to DLI (the Defense Language Institute)? That place is filled with freaks and fa**!" And frankly, there were quite a bit of, hmm, how to put it, "artistic" types out there...
