80 arrested after probe (Illegal immigrant workers)
The Cincinnati Post ^ | may 11,2006 | Paul A. Long /Shelly Whitehead

Four supervisors for Fischer Homes were among 80 people arrested Tuesday as part of a two-year probe into the use of illegal immigrant workers in the home construction industry in Northern Kentucky.

The supervisors were charged with hiring illegal immigrants. The other 76 persons arrested were charged with being in the United States illegally.

The investigation, which is continuing, ties Fischer Homes directly to the subcontractor who hired and employed the undocumented immigrants, according to court documents. Indeed, court papers say, the subcontractor, Robert Pratt, also provided housing for the immigrants, most of whom are from Mexico or Guatemala.

As court hearings in the case began Tuesday, other federal authorities were at the headquarters of Fischer Homes on Chancellor Drive in Fort Mitchell. They arrived about noon with local police and were still there Tuesday evening, but did not say what they were looking for.

In a statement released late Tuesday from Washington, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which led the investigation, issued a harsh warning to employers.

"ICE has no tolerance for corporate supervisors who harbor illegal aliens for their workforce and deny labor opportunities for legitimate American employees," said Julie L. Myers, the assistant secretary for the agency.

"This enforcement action demonstrates how we will use all our investigative tools to bring these individuals to justice, no matter how large or small the company."

home construction

Otherwise known as "Jobs that Americans don't want to do". When I was young and un-trained or educated, I did landscaping and also considered janitorial work as a way to work my way through school. Nobody told me that those were jobs I didn't want to do.

Today's youth can't get a job as a landscaper, janitor, sheetrocker, or roofer due to 20 MILLION laborers who have illegally entered the job market.

two-year probe

It took TWO YEARS!?!??!?

I think about TWO DAYS in Roseville California would be sufficient. Just look up on the roofs.

Enforcing existing laws is a good start towards cracking down on employers who hire illegals.

Hey Myers, have ICE determine if the illegal aliens used false ID. If so, they have committed a felony and should be charged. This will help end "it's only a misdemeanor" myth.

ICE needn't spend two years in the metropolitan Kansas City area, just go to any home improvement big box store parking lot, grocery store, restaurant, lawn service company, government parks and street departments, or better yet, hang out at the local driver's license bureaus.

The will be run over by at least 100 people an hour here illegally!

Had to wait until all of the building was completed so as not to bankrupt them and loose all of the money that was advanced to them from the banks.

"ICE has no tolerance for corporate supervisors who harbor illegal aliens for their workforce and deny labor opportunities for legitimate American employees," said Julie L. Myers, the assistant secretary for the agency.

Supervisors would not be hiring illegals if they did not have tacit approval and pressure from the executives at the higher levels of the corporate hierarchy to do so to reduce costs. The body starts to rot from the head. The CEOs of those companies need to be arrested and convicted. Then maybe the illegal employment practices in the homebuilding industry will change.

as part of a two-year probe

For the "Too little, too late" crowd, it takes a while to build a solid case. This wasn't started last week just appease angry voters.

just go to any home improvement big box store parking lot, grocery store, restaurant, lawn service company, government parks and street departments, or better yet, hang out at the local driver's license bureaus.

And what - stop people at random and demand proof of citizenship?

If you were stopped on the street today could you prove your citizenship?

"...The men performed skilled labor such as framing, drywalling and roofing, according to court documents. One attorney said they were paid $7 to $10 an hour, significantly below the average wage for such work.

According to the Carpenters Union, union carpenters averaged $20.45 an hour in 2000, and nonunion carpenters averaged $13.51. Union drywallers averaged $17.93 an hour in 2000, and nonunion workers averaged $12.19.

Says it all as to why 8 to 30 million are allowed to remain here. And for those who use the service of construction companies that use illegals, if you think you're not getting charged the union/non-union rate while the contractor pockets the difference, I got a bridge to sell you......that crosses the Rio Grande. - OB1

No need to get huffy here, the ones I was referring to are driving without licenses on their vehicles, running red lights, making turn where none are allowed, driving wrong way on superhighways, shoplifting, beating their families, etc. A few crimes and misdemeanors, I think we are still required not to commit.
