Nearly half of kids under 5 in U.S. are minorities
The Seattle Times ^ | 5/10/06 | D'Vera Cohn and Tara Bahrampour

WASHINGTON — Nearly half of the nation's children under 5 are racial or ethnic minorities, and the percentage is increasing mainly because the Hispanic population is growing so rapidly, according to a census report released today.

Hispanics are the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority group...And the increase in young children is largely a Hispanic story, driving 70 percent of the growth in children younger than 5. Forty-five percent of U.S. children younger than 5 are minorities.

The new numbers offer a preview of demographic shifts to come...In some parts of the country, the transformation is more visible than in others. Large swaths of the upper Midwest are still mainly non-Hispanic white. But minorities are a majority of children younger than 5...

William Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution, predicted that the United States will have "a multicultural population that will probably be more tolerant, accommodating to other races and more able to succeed in a global economy." There could be increased competition for money and power, he added. "The older, predominantly white baby-boom generations will need to accommodate..."

William O'Hare, a senior fellow at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, said he is not sure the country is prepared to provide the extra help that immigrants' children often need to become well-educated workers and the future supporters of retirement programs for a predominantly white older population. Some Americans, he said, will not welcome the news that minorities are nearly the majority among young children.

"Part of the people will see this and say, 'Gee, these kids are really our future parents and workers, and we need to take care of them,' " O'Hare said. "The other would say it is time to send them all home."

Not that much these days, but they did have a very anti-democratic and anti-protestant ethic a while back where they kept trying to blow up parliament and the pope kept getting together huge armies to invade and conquer free England. God, of course, being a protestant at heart always ensured that the English foiled their papist plots and destroyed their great armies and navies even when heavily out-numbered! ;-)

God must be a border-line schizophrenic if the resurrection-doubting Anglican communion is the apple of his eye :0)

By the early 1850s there was a trend to organize nationally against the presumed immigrant threat.
The old parties, the nativists said, had not confronted the danger.
The Democrats, it was charged, were supported by the aliens;
the party needed their votes and catered to their whims.
The Whigs appeared helpless before them.

The Know-Nothing movement illustrated....the potentiality for political disruption
when existing parties fail to deal adequately with volatile social and political tensions.
Although the movement quickly lost out to the Republicans, its ideas did not,
and they formed one aspect of the Republican appeal for more than a generation to come.

Interesting that an issue of immigration contributed to the death of an established party
and the birth of a new one.

Oh goody a bunch of illiterates are our future,

"William Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution, predicted that the United States will have "a multicultural population that will probably be more tolerant, accommodating to other races and more able to succeed in a global economy." "

And the preprations are being made as we speak. That is the reason to allow 20 million third world nationals into this country to reproduce all in the name of Globalism. Blame it all on Roe and abortions. It must stop.

Alter Kaker: that was funny. Thanks for posting that. Coming from Maine which was a hot bed of the know nothing party---I think it's important that people take the time to understand what they did--and avoid those mistakes.

Yeah, we've done so badly in the global economy over the past century or so (eyes rolling). And Mexicans are soooo tolerant of illegal immigrants from Central America coming into their country.

Do these liberal bozos actually think things through or do a reality check because proclaiming such claptrap?

"This would not be the case if children of Mex/Anglo ethnicity were considered white instead of Hispanic. The ideology of victimhood dictates that they be considered minoirities despite their lineage."

Dead on in that point.

My kids are of mixed heritage (Mexican-German-Irish-Norwegian) and would normally pop up on census and survey data as Hispanic. We don't allow that to happen, though. They're always entered as Anglo or "Other" (with the descriptive being "American").

It is the opinion of my Mexican-ancestry wife that here grandparents and great grandparents worked long and hard to be considered Americans (they did arrive legally) and that using ethno-politic driven names for the ancestry of our kids would be insulting to the memories of those who came before them.

She has a funny method of dealing with the obnoxious Spanish speakers we run into all the time in SA. We both speak fluent Spanish and can often hear those speaking it talking trash about us and those around us. My wife's response to them:

"Back off - my family's been here so long we actually speak English."

The last party with your party's platform was appropriately known as the "Know-Nothing" party. Take your anti-Catholic crap and stuff it.

"Agreed. That's why we must support the American Party. Our platform: * Severe limits on immigration, especially from Catholic countries. * Restricting political office to native-born Americans * Mandating a wait of 21 years before an immigrant can gain citizenship. * Restricting public school teachers to Protestants. * Mandating daily Bible readings in public schools (from the Protestant version of the Bible). * Restricting the sale of liquor."
Do you really hate the U.S. Constitution that much?

Well, first the latino birthrates I think are a bit misleading. Latino birthrates have been decling at a drastic rate. However in truth America is always changing. The US of the 1930's is the not the USA of today. The key is retaining whats is best. The usa will survive.

Survival at what cost and in what form? What is going on is unprecedented in our history. We are being invaded and really don't know the numbers, which could be as high as 20 milliion according to the Bear-Stearns report.

The foreign-born population of the United States is currently 33.1 million, equal to 11.5 percent of the U.S. population. Of this total, the Census Bureau estimates 8-9 million are illegal immigrants. Other estimates indicate a considerably higher number of illegal immigrants.

Approximately 1 million people receive permanent residency annually. In addition, the Census Bureau estimates a net increase of 500,000 illegal immigrants annually.

The present level of immigration is significantly higher than the average historical level of immigration. This flow may be attributed, in part, to the extraordinary broadening of U.S. immigration policy in 1965. Since 1970, more than 30 million legal and illegal immigrants have settled in the U.S., representing more than one-third of all people ever to come to America's shores.

At the peak of the Great Wave of immigration in 1910, the number of immigrants living in the U.S. was less than half of what it is today, though the percentage of the population was slightly higher. The annual arrival of 1.5 million legal and illegal immigrants, coupled with 750,000 annual births to immigrant women, is the determinate factor— or three-fourths— of all U.S. population growth.

America caught a fatal illness in the '60's, called liberalism, or more correctly socialism. It never recovered, and fought valiantly against the disease right up until the end.

Those were the platforms of a late-19th century radical right political party who feared immigration... look up the Know-Nothing Party on Wikipedia.

Wow! That is certainly amazing!!!

Right, except for the "may be." In another generation, the country will be unrecognizable. Everybody will be taking "sensitivity training" to try to prevent multiple civil wars.

Then there was the one about the blonde with three kids who didn't want to get pregnant again, because every fourth child in the world is Chinese.

"This article is based on a Census report that was released this week. From this report, in NJ, Mexican women have 4 times the fertility rates of white women in prime ages for child bearing. White women have a fertility rate at below 1/2 the commonly accepted replacement birthrate. Black women are below replacement levels also, though not as bad."

That must mean a lot of white women are not having children at all. In our town, largely white, the average number of children is well over two, close to three, I'd say.

"* Restricting public school teachers to Protestants."

You mean, like Episcopalians and Unitarians?

Calvinists?

Evangelicals?
