The media read websites like FR, and they can see all the talk of staying home, supporting Democrats, supporting third parties, favoring impeachment.

The Post and others are in full scale reinforcement of conservative discouragement: "It's no use voting. Bush is at 31%, he can never recover, Republicans are turning on each other."

It's about voter suppression now, and it's working.

On FR, the bitching and bellyaching is ongoing from the Donner party.

After the election, if the Dems are elected to the House, the bitching and bellyaching will continue.

These people have NEVER been happy with Bush and the Republicans in Congress, and they never will be.

Jim Robinson wrote the foreward for a book called Hillary's Secret War. Free Republic is mentioned prominently in the book.

It details how leftists come to sites like this one, sign up, post as conservatives for a while to establish their credentials, and then, when they see an opportunity, start to turn the conservative base against Republicans.

Jim Robinson was able to follow where posters were coming from and in the 90's, lots and lots of posters were pretending to be conservatives but were actually posting from the Clinton White House and Washington Post, etc.

Are you saying the media is responsible for Bush's disastrous policy decisions? This isn't a conspiracy, Sink.

These people have NEVER been happy with Bush and the Republicans in Congress, and they never will be.

I voted for Bush. I was thrilled when he beat Kerry (my excitement about the victory is probably contained in my posting history back around election time). I would love Bush to give us a reason to be excited about him again, but it seems pretty unlikely that he's going to suddenly stop being a globalist and start being a conservative.

I was. I have not been happy with the senate Republicans, but I have supported them and tried hard to understand their maneuvers, only to discover they don't have any.

I have been patient with Bush and liked many of the things he has done, but they have not been large issues except Afghanistan, Iraq, and the court nominees, and they haven't been lately. I could even handle the atrocious spending if it was being spent of national security, border patrol, and training replacements for all the Clinton appointees that have NEVER been fired but should be, energy and infrastructure. But that's not how it's being spent by and large. My issue is waste more so than it is the total amount being spent. If the spending improves our lives in terms of national security measures, cheaper and more plentiful energy production, and improved infrastructures all for generations to come, I can deal with that debt. But not this, no way.

Congressional Republicans, mostly those in the senate, have been a big disappointment, and Bush has been off the dime for too long. Bush and the senate Republicans just WILL NOT engage the Dems AND THE MEDIA in the trenches and fight it out. I'm sick of paying the freight for ALL of them. You could roll the entire congress together and this administration, and all of them together have less value to me than one single soldier fighting the fight or standing ready.

"These people have NEVER been happy with Bush and the Republicans in Congress, and they never will be."

That is so NOT true. I have supported President Bush 100%, including Dubai. You have no idea how pissed off I am that he would betray me and the national security of my country by NOT securing the borders and rewarding illegal behavior with amnesty.

If you agree with his position, I'd like to know why? Or are you just going along because it's what Bush says and you support him no matter what.

Some of you here are sick puppies (jaded degenerates) to use and mock the tragic situation of the donner party...

Who are you people???

The Donner Party was the most famous tragedy in the history of the westward migration. Almost ninety wagon train emigrants were unable to cross the Sierra Nevada before winter, and almost one-half starved to death. Perhaps because they were ordinary people -- farmers, merchants, parents, children -- their story captures the imagination. The logs on this site contain the words of the participants from their diaries, letters and first-hand accounts, balanced by the perspective of later historians. The logs describe the locations of their trail and camps in detail so you can follow in the Donner Party's wagon tracks and footsteps.

Thursday, April 22, 1847
Fallon's Journal of the Fourth Relief: "On the 22d., traveled down Juba about 18 miles, and camped at the head of Bear River valley.--" [18 miles from Bear Valley would be at the Pass.]

In 1879, Keseberg gave a statement to C.F. McGlashan: "One day I was dragging myself slowly along behind the party, when I came to a place which had evidently been used as a camping ground by some of the previous parties. Feeling very tired, I thought it would be a good place to make some coffee. Kindling a fire, I filled my coffee-pot with fresh snow and sat waiting for it to melt and get hot. Happening to case my eyes carelessly around, I discovered a little piece of calico protruding from the snow. Half thoughtlessly, half out of idle curiosity, I caught hold of the cloth, and finding it did not come readily, I gave it a strong pull. I had in my hands the body of my dead child Ada! She had been buried in the snow which, melting down, had disclosed a portion of her clothing. I thought I should go frantic! It was the first intimation I had of her death, and it came with such a shock!"

[Three year old Ada Keseberg had died on February 25, at the First Reief's camp at the upper end of the Yuba Bottoms, present Kingvale.]
