Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.
Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.
The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.
There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.
Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.
It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

I am honestly surprised that the open-borders folks have proven themselves to be that shameless. They're going after the Minutemen like Kerry's folks went after the SwiftBoat Vets. I don't see how that can be reconciled with this being a conservative website.
This is a very fine post ... recommended reading for all.
G'night.
I don't believe you are pretending to be "conservative" you actually believe that. The truth is that you are so far right that you and the insane left have met up. You and they have so much pent up rage that you can't let it go. You and they see betrayal in everyone you come into contact with.
You thrive on outrage and when there is nothing to be outraged about you make something up. From this president's first day in office you and people like you were swearing never to vote for him again. I can't imagine living your pathetic lives for even a day not to mention a lifetime. You are sad little people.
By the way, what is your circulation these days?
And Reagan was a full-blown Marxist. /sarc
Ageed. It would be a start and a chance.
Thank you, sir. Let's pursue this together, shall we?
Name ONE "open border" poster here.
Well, I know just as many Republicans who can see further than the end of their noses that wouldn't dream of handing this party over to the Democrats.
How about trying to come up with something we can actually DO to agitate for real change? Too hard?? Are you too weak to even try?
That's MENOPAUSAL HOUSEWIVES to you, girlie.
Ingraham can be whacked at times and I haven't paid much attention to her rants of late. Pinning blame on one man isn't the solution, since there are many in congress who voted for the 86 amnesty, but are singing a different tune now, depending on the audience. More states should follow Georgia's lead on rounding up illegals and those who support them (including "religious" groups).
Right. I guess those hundreds of personal attacks against me meant nothing.
As I said before. Take off the blinders.
IMO, border states should be held accountable for not securing their boundaries (that includes coastal), if it's of any concern to it's citizens. Usually the states only pass laws meant to appease the current illegals, but invite more trouble by not enforcing current law. There are many states that allowed the illegal protection, and many are along the southern border. Others invite illegals with offers of free tuition or other freebies.
Bush can't simply wave a magic wand and impose his will on congress, and that's where the problem currently sits. Your anger is a bit misguided if you expect 60+ years of open border policy to suddenly vanish within the span of a few years.
What have your state's lawmakers done about it besides giving lip service to the problem? Where do your congress critters stand? Folks can't b!tch if they send do-nothings like McLoon to D.C. time after time.
They WANT the problems to remain.............and they are getting away with dividing us right now, and shoving this once strong forum down into the sewer.
I couldnt agree with you more. There was a time not long ago when if Freeper disagreed with another Freeper they would lay out facts and logic in the discussion.
For the first time ever I have been called a Bush-Basher here in FR. I told some friends of mine that and they laughed. They couldnt believe how anyone could come to that conslusion.
Lately all I see is name calling such as: "Bush-Basher", "Troll", "Invader From DU", "You Have No Reading Comprehension"...to tell you the truth... they are all liberal-type comebacks without any logic or facts. A sure sign they are on the losing side of the discussion.
Incorrect. The honor will be all yours.
LOL -- hey, I am still a young thang!
Now YOU'RE posting that crap?
You people have lost your minds.
