Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Posted on 05/10/2006 7:15:13 PM PDT by Dems_R_Losers

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

You don't want to get this problem solved, either, do you, tru?

You just feel manly when you say foul things about good people.

Why don't you try a different technique and actually work to get this job done?

but they/you are being drowned out by the hysterical, angry, disruptors who have no intention of working together with a 'bushbot' to actually have some effect on things.

You are not doing yourself any favors when you tell yourself that all of the anger, the disappointment, and the cries of betrayal are just a bunch of trolls pretending to be conservatives. Just imagine for a moment that all the trolls and disruptors that you perceive would suddenly disappear. Do you really think that this place would suddenly become a pro-Bush utopia, with everyone rallying behind Bush? No, what would happen is you would have to face the reality that the discontent is real, and that it isn't some brilliantly orchestrated DU campaign.

I see you're once again trying to build up the Republican ranks for your beloved President with your loving, decent attitude and kind words.

They are YOUR words, EV. Yours.

BTW, you came on THIS very thread tonight and ATTACKED ME first.

I never, ever post to you first; you always post to me first with some snotty remark -- and they run off and nail yourself to a cross like a girlie victim. If you can't take the replies, why do you CONTINUE to stalk me?

You've got a lot of b*lls coming on these threads acting so high and mighty; you're been throwin S**T on this forum for years.

Hey KJC1, try to remember that this is America. To win an election here you need to give voters a reason to vote for you. Berating disaffected voters and threatening them of the consequences the other party taking control just won't work--the 'Rats found that out the hard way in 2004.

The base revolted--rightfully so--over the Miers nomination. Bush listened, fixed his mistake, and now we're blessed with Alito. There's still some time for Bush and congressional 'Icans to listen to their base now. You have a better chance of getting what you want by lobbying them to do what is right rather than insulting the base here. How many disaffected conservatives minds have you changed by scolding them? My guess is that you can count the number on the fingers of one hand with five fingers left over.

The map was solid Red before the '04 elections and it will still be solid red after the '06 elections even with all the Bush Bashing One Issue Wonders. Even though congressional approvals are low nationwide the individual congressional district approval ratings were around 65% meaning everyone just dislikes the other person's Rep but would still vote for theirs.

Let's see I was active duty 1967-1971, at what time did Vietnam become enough.

Iraq is nowhere near being "another Vietnam".

It is another '04 sign on. Move along.

You're branding an entire year's worth of sign-ons as trolls now?

I'm willing to reach out to like minded posters and sanely come to an agreement that benefits us us both.

I really think that a LOT of us are.

We just need to clear out the posters whose only goal is to rip us apart, or at least talk over their nonsense.

I think it can be done.

But not tonight. :) Perhaps a thread should be started soon with the express goal of working together WITHOUT attacks, and see what we can come up with.

Do you think for one second, that those serving in Iraq or Afganistan, would think it just sweet, that while they are facing horror, illegals are rolling into this country?

Ya, can't. Your fellow citizens have their lives at risk and facing a generally bad day, each day. But, illegals can just roll across this border and set up shop, no problem, no risk to them. It insults those in the service. It is sick.

You might be surprised by how many gays are in his Administration and very close to him. That's an issue he talks about one way and acts another, but it isn't one I care about.

NO you're not. You never say a single thing that's constructive, do you? You just bash Republicans.

How about trying to come up with something we can actually DO to agitate for real change? Too hard?? Are you too weak to even try?

Did Simcox attempt to feel up his own daughter, or not? His first wife filed a criminal charge against him stating that he did.

Got a source for that charge?
