Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.
Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.
The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.
There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.
Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.
It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

WTF do you think Bush has been doing for the last 5.5 years...needlepointing? The way some of you "conservatives" and "Republicans" talk you would think all he had on his plate was YOUR pet issue (an important one, amongst many). If you want to hold a grudge and screw us all by throwing away your vote, I can't stop you, but I will be pissed at you for it. Voting is a privilege, and if you abuse that to collective detriment, just don't expect party balloons because it is pathetic.

Your comments on SS are good. Unfortunately, most voters won't go along with them. That's not the President's fault -- he tried some very modest reform and couldn't even get that through Congress. There is lots of work to do to get more reliable votes in Congress.
The same was true in 2000 and 2004, but I held my nose in both elections.
It did happen. I was a member of Friends of the Border Patrol last year. The name of the private ranch that served as our HQ appears in Spanish-language Mexican reports on "vigilante" activities. The only one who know of this location was the Border Patrol who were entrusted with knowledge of all of our activities. The link to the reports appeared on the May 10, 2006 Drudge Report.

I'll be damned if I'm going to vote Dim or not vote at all.
I've always said that I admired the President's commitment to his ideas. What some probably call "bullheadedness". The one thing noone can say about him is that he legislates by polls.
But somebody has got to get through to him and the party that the positions they've staked out on immigration, and the lack of action on a coherent energy policy that should include drilling in unpopular places, refineries and nuclear, is driving the base away.
Yes, the President has had some good proposals on some of this stuff, but when they run into the slightest opposition, it is dropped.
I, too, wonder why the Republicans REFUSE to use the bully pulpit of the majority to get things done. Their inaction and ineptitude will cost them and us.
There are not 60 Senators willing to invoke cloture on SS reform, and there are not 50 Senators willing to abolish filibusters to pass SS reform. The fact that Republicans are a numerical majority is not enough in the Senate.
