Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

It pains me to agree with you on this point. But at this point in time third party votes are a waste of time.

Not from the leaders of the party's' point of view. They know they won't win BUT they can make a very good living from picking a hot button issue that really resonates with a million or so angry single issue voters and telling them EXACTLLY what they want to hear. They are secure in the knowledge that they will never have to follow through but the money comes rolling in. Pat Buchanan received about 6 million dollars in contributions for TV commercials he never ran. It is one hell of a racket for the right guy that has the knack.

Yes.

The guy I'm imagining is Father Coughlin in a Brooks Bros. suit.

This is BS. There are a few people disgruntled about the illegal invaders but no one that I know of is running from the President.

Where then is the solution? I supported President Bush and still do to a point. But he is wrong about illegal aliens.

And how much money did Bay siphon off and don't forget about her kids, whom she also had on the payroll of the Reform Party!

And now, Bay's with Tancredo, who claims that he isn't running for president. I wonder how much money Bay is making from that peculiar partnership.

You obviously believe rhetoric when it is action that is needed. His ACTIONS belie any real protection of the Border. Do you understand the concept of ACTION not rhetoric? His website can say anything he wants but it is the action that matters. He hasn't DONE anything but talk except when it comes to telling the MEXICAN Government where the Minutemen are so the illegals can avoid them and cross somewhere else! His actions says he is for the invasion of illegal aliens.

I suspect you are actually a liberal, albeit a stingy one.

Oh, when did you get appointed to the Conservative Credentials Committee? I'd say that real conservatives care about abortion, gay marriage, and guns. All the other issues--taxes, the judiciary--are second-tier.

Then report tom tancredo who admits he had his basement theater built with illegal labor(I know, it was the contractor's "fault", blah, blah, blah), but if he was true to his rheotric he would get a sledgehammer and destroy the work done, by his rhetoric, impure labor.

What a completely worthless and moronic strawman you keep puttin up about Tancredo. A sledgehammer? Just plain idiotic. And then you expect to draw people into an argument about it.

Now, if you Tancredo Trashers really think that Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo broke the law, then please get up to Colorado and get a Grand Jury convened to indict him. Until then, shut the hell up. We don't need the hate Tancredo, open borders crowd hurting a conservative Republican with a 100% "Best and Brightest" rating from the American Conservative Union just because they can't get past their irrational hate for anyone who does anything substantial to secure the borders of our country.

Now I'll use my best Dane voice: "Your ethnic animus is showing. You just hate Tancredo because he's a WOP guinea. "

Hell for all I know Tancredo may be a flaming liberal.

100% "Best and Brightest" rating from the American Conservative Union. I think I've posted it numerous times. Look it up. www.conservative.org. He shares that rating with ony 38 other conservative Republicans. Wanna keep trashing him? He is not a one issue congressman or he wouldn't have earned that rating for his overall voting record.

Neither Sinkspur nor Tancredo gave one cent to an illegal.

Tancredo for sure didn't and wouldn't.

But didn't Sinkspur admit to having a maid that he thought was illegal?

This wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't for tancredo's hypocrisy. He is the one who brands such people as farmers and contractors as evil, while using illegal labor to build his basement theater.

More Tancredo Trashing. Please point me to the statement from Tancredo where he branded farmers and contractors as "evil." Either that, or admit your lie. Using your logic, I could say that you think that conservative Republicans (like Tom Tancredo) are evil because you keep attacking him and other conservative Republicans. In fact, it seems to be the ONLY thing that you do here on Free Republic.

Also tancredo has never worked in a wealth creating field, he's always worked in the public sector(Dep. Of Education, legislator) or in a non-wealth creating think tank and the vast majority of his career has been in the public sector.

Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo enjoys a 100% "Best and Brightest" rating from the American Conervative Union. I don't know how different you think his votes could be if he'd "worked in a wealth creating field" or how he could be more conservative. His voting record puts to a lie your stupid, baseless, and incessant attacks against Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo.

When are you going to stop using Free Republic to continue your anti-conservative Republican agenda? This site is designed for furthering conservative causes yet you seem to spend almost all of your time here attacking conservatives and damaging their efforts.

A bunch of conservatives had that bright idea in 92, and look what that got us..

Balanced budget, at least some imigration enforcement, and slower government growth. Doesn't look too bad these days.

Yes I have as a matter of fact. I run for local office and make a difference in my local government can you say the same? Bush is commander-in-cheif but he has not lived up to his oath of office which is to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic and defend this country from invasion. He has talked about doing something but the mass invasion continues. NO ACTION! and his rhetoric only invites more invasion! Guest worker equals amnesty which only invites more invasion!
