Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

You're nasty, brutish, and short. And your mother never really loved you.

I have no idea why someone would post something that vile unless he were looking in a mirror.

I had two Anglo guys put down a wood floor. The difference in the quality of the work...

She does a better job than the Anglo maid I had to fire...

Pretty judgemental for someone demanding inclusion. If you don't see the irony there bifocals may be in order.

uh, oh. So it is all these people who are bashing everyone who complains about the faux conservatism of the Republican party and who call all of us who complain, "fake conservatives" who are the real fake conservatives. They will cherish a pile of dung, if someone tells them it is a rose or Republican.

Are you saying I shouldn't be able to judge the difference in the quality of work of one person versus another?

I guess I don't understand......

You have a maid that is an illegal. You suspect that you've broken the law by hiring an illegal.. lol. This isn't difficult.

You were judging them by their ethnicity, not simply as people. Otherwise, why mention the "Anglos"?

Thats not the only downward pressure. The illegal aliens, H1b workers from 'sender' countries are also causing wages to be depressed to the point of parity with the third world. Its all happening because of "free trade".

The more conditions in "sender" countries improve, the more emigrants those countries will send, at least until living standards in sending and receiving countries achieve rough parity.

Because the tile guys were Mexicans and the floor guys were Anglos. And I was judging their work, not their ethnicity. The Mexicans just happened to do a better job than the Anglos.

Sue me.

I don't know if she is illegal or not, and I am not going to ask. Her boss is legal, and that's all I need to know.

If you suspect and don't bother asking, you are as guilty as though you knew because you had opportunity to deal with it either way and chose not to. Given your background, you already know this. I was joking with you before; but, now I'm a little bothered.

All this "have you broken the law?" crap. I'm truly beginning to believe that some of these, as I think you or someone else described them, "FRigilantes," actually have some longing for some sort of fascist state where we're all required to check each other's papers.

And, if we refuse to say whether or not we've done so, they'll say some totally Kafka thing like, "well, we'll take that as a 'no'." Scr** that! I don't care if my roofer looks like the Frito Bandito and come singing down the street--I'm not going to ask for his papers any more than I as to check the busboy's papers when I go to Mexican Fiesta!

Don't lose sleep on my account.

I'm sure you've got plenty of illegals in your area you can chase down and harrass.

I'm sure I do. I'm wondering what part of illegal it is that doesn't bother you enough to want the law followed. Not attacking you, just amazed at the nonchalant approach.

Unless you report every speeder that zips past you the the police, when you see them, may I suggest you start there if you are so concerned about "law."

A speeder will kill you before an illegal will.
