Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.
Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.
The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.
There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.
Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.
It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

You really need to get a grip. Becoming hysterical, you are.
You're a hypocrite and a tool for the Dems.
The only truthful statement you made is that this, indeed, has come full circle.
This all started when you called me a hypocrite, your very first post. Now you've done it again. Cite the exact post which can back up your claim that I am a hypocrite. Neglecting to do so supports my claim that you continue to be a liar.
Site the exact post where it was I who brought up Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo. Failing to do so shows you lie, yet again.
Show any post where I was in "hysterics" about hiring practices. Posting the word "INTERESTING" doesn't qualify as HYSTERICAL.
On the other had, I have consistently stated that a law was the topic of discussion, not Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo, whom you have consistently, hysterically, attacked.
False, again.
Site the exact post where it was I who brought up Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo. Failing to do so shows you lie, yet again.
Uh, I brought up Tancredo to show your hypocrisy. You're tiresome.
Me and the rest of this country's hard core Conservatives will welcome "True" converts over to a new affiliation of True Conservatives. The Rino's and the rest can go take a flyin leap over a high cliff!
I admit I was mistaken about the content of your first post to me. That was when you started your smear against Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo.
It was your second post when you called me a hypocrite, and have subsequently been outted a liar, as you still cannot back up your claim.
I posted quotes from Tom. Be honest.
It was your second post when you called me a hypocrite
Which is true.
Have your last word now, adios.
For your reading comprehension purposes, I reiterate:
I said that was when you STARTED your smear against Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo.
You were smearing him in your posts, were you not?
That was why you brought him up to start with, was it not?
That was your point, was it not?
Who smeared saint Tom? He was a prime example of all the law breaking you and yours keep yapping about. He is a criminal and should be in jail and his house seized.
Should we take a vote or have a show of hands on how many people think that you hate Tancredo based on your posting history? Do you really want to go there?
No, President Bush has his work cut out for him. The problem is not one of perception or image; it is one of ideology and actions.
Perhaps you haven't read Spiff's post:
Why don't you and your fellow Tancredo haters get with the Democrats who also hate Republican Conservative Tom Tancredo almost as much as you, and see if you can shop around for a grand jury that will indict him on those charges ala Tom Delay? That would be constructive and certainly would demonstrate your support for Conservative Republicans in Congress. I can assure you that you will fail because if there had been an actual crime committed, or even if a liberal thought he could prosecute Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo on that charge and make a grand jury believe for a second that a crime was committed, they would have done it already. Certainly his Democrat opponent, who brought the issue up just like you have to attack Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo, would have ensured that the charges were filed, the grand jury convened, and Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo indicted ala Tom Delay. So, you all keep bringing this stuff up like it means something in your little Tancredo Trashfests. Meanwhile, 89 other Conservative Republican Congressmen have joined Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo's Immigration Reform Caucus and support his efforts. When you smear the Conservative Republican Chairman of the Immigration Reform Caucus and the leader of the immigration reform movement in Congress, you also smear the nearly 40% of Republicans in the House who have signed up as members of that caucus.
Finally, Jim Robinson has made it clear that we MUST work to assure the election of conservative Republicans to Congress and that anything openly counter to that effort is not going to be tolerated on FR. When you attack and smear Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo, using the very same attacks that his Democrat opponent did, you're clearly working to defeat a Conservative Republican and elect a Democrat to fill a House seat. You and the other Tancredo Trashing haters may want to consider that as you use every opportunity available to you to trash Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo. Yesterday, one of you Tancredo Trashers actually delighted in the idea of Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo dying a gruesome death. Disgusting.

BTW, as I keep repeating, it's NOT about Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo, it's about the LAW, the breaking of which is a felony.
Then report tom tancredo who admits he had his basement theater built with illegal labor(I know, it was the contractor's "fault", blah, blah, blah), but if he was true to his rheotric he would get a sledgehammer and destroy the work done, by his rhetoric, impure labor.
And if that be true, how does that change the law how, exactly? Does it nullify the law's existence, intent? It does not, ergo, your point is moot.
Dane, go ahead, report him. But, as Spiff pointed out, it's highly likely the Democrats have already tried to take down Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo. Sounds like you would rather align yourself with their cause even further by trying to get a Conservative Republican removed from office.
Hell for all I know Tancredo may be a flaming liberal. You say he is conservative because he is pushing immigration reform. I think he found an issue that allowed him to renege on his term limit promise but that's just me. Can you list his stances on anything other than immigration?.
Then Tancredo is the last person to be throwing stones and that goes for his groupies.
Here's google (for Tom Tancredo Conservative Issues), have at it.
