Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Look, I'm not going to be a party to electing even one rat to the congress or the senate (or any local offices for that matter) nor will I be doing anything whatsoever which will help elect Hillary Clinton or any other Marxist Democrat to the presidency. Is that language plain enough for you to understand?

I contracted out the remodeling of my house two years ago as a homeowner. And I took the top bid on the remodeling because of the across-the-board positive references I got.

Are you admitting to hiring illegal aliens, Sink?

I submit that amnesty for illegals is a leftist goal,

Why's that? Could it be because the marxist-organized marches were all demanding amnesty and that marxists, communists, and international socialists have been supporting amnesty and open borders in the United States for a long time? So what does that tell you about those that support that amnesty (no matter what euphemism they've chose to describe it)?

The best way to ensure the Marxists do not win is to defeat them head on.

I hired a contractor. Like Tom Tancredo, I had no idea whether the people he hired were legal or not, nor did I care.

But, if they were illegal, I can see why lots of Americans have mixed emotions about illegal immigration. I also wish he had hired illegals to do the flooring.

I am one of the loyal troops that are upset with Pres. Bush and the republicans in Congress. This doesn't mean I won't vote republican but I sure don't feel like volunteering again to man the phones and helping with the mailings. Just don't have the fire I have had over the last 10 years or so. It is hard to get excited when you know if you win you lose and will have more spending, open borders with amnesty for illegals, a WH that will not stand up for itself. Excuse the ramblings but this is how I feel.

When Tom Tancredo accidentally did it, when he found out about his error he was upset that the error had been made and ensured that it would never happen again.

Yet your comments on it are a bit different. I'll quote:

"Illegal immigration is not a "fighting" issue for me. I've had too much experience with illegals who worked their butts off after I couldn't get legal workers to do a job right. I think that's why lots of Americans are just not that upset with allowing illegals to remain in America after we close the borders. They've seen the work they do and their work ethic and admire it. "

That sounds like a glowing endorsement of using contractors who break the law and hire illegal aliens. I don't sense even a tiny bit of regret or remorse.

So, it begs the question, would you do it again? I mean, based upon your advertisement of using illegal labor because Americans suck so bad at it, assumptions can to easily be made. So, would you do it again? Be honest.

Why should I regret it?

Would I do it again?

Yes. I would hire the same contractor. In fact, I've recommended him to others, and the painting subcontractor to several people who were looking to have their houses painted.

Though it was already fairly obvious that a lot of folks around here hire illegals (how else to explain their ho-hum attitude toward stopping illegal immigration?), I'm glad to see them admitting it publicly. I expect more folks to come out with such confessions to try to bolster that side of the argument. It'll be an "everybody does it" moment.

I never said that you would be a party to that.

I just sought clarification on the thread you posted last night. I've received that clarification. Thank you.

I didn't hire any illegals. I hired a contractor, and it's his business who he hires.

If that attitude is good enough for Tom Tancredo, it's good enough for me.

Okay. Just so we're clear on this. Hired illegal aliens. Recommended to others. Would do it again. Got it. Carry on.

Since when do "conservatives" not "give a crap" about selective enforcement of the law?

I don't give a crap about it because it distracts the pols from my top issues and because it can cost us votes from Hispanics.

I like the president. He seems to always be pushing himself to be a better man. I believe he cares deeply about the roles and responsibility of his job and does not take it lightly. That said, I do wish he would address his critics more. I know his tenure has been tough but he should see it as an opportunity to show even greater courage and leadership (we could always use more).

I like and trust this president too, but have said for a couple of years now that his PR campaign is horrible. Non-existent really.
