Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Posted on 05/10/2006 7:15:13 PM PDT by Dems_R_Losers

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Tony Snow can't help. He is only the messenger. IT IS THE MESSAGE THAT IS WRONG!

The Republican Party is confident that Republicans would never vote for a Democrap - WRONG!

If the Democraps take over, the efforts of twelve years will be flushed down the drain in about three months! This result will have been caused by the ACTIONS of the Republicans in the Administration and the Congress, AND NOT BY THE REACTION OF THE VOTERS!

What, threads are hermetically sealed now? That wasn't an argument from another thread. It was a very inconvenient comment by which Howlin torpedoed her own argument in this thread.

You're the only one who took issue with it, which proves my point you're obsessed with Howlin

Window dressing. Don't listen to their words; watch their actions. So far, their actions aren't all that impressive.

Wrong. Many argued with her. I'm the only one who noticed the point of fatal vulnerability of her argument, and successfully used it.

I have now debated with you for quite a while (and apparently people are timing me, now). Am I obsessed with you, too?

It's all a matter of action and reaction.
Be the Republican party we expect and votes follow.

All we hope is they will secure the border and tell the mexican govt to stop pushing their nationals on us.

Keep it up for a few days, track my posts, follow me from thread to thread and I'll let you know. If following Howlin from thread to thread, day in and day out, hanging onto every post of Howlin's with some insane weird notion you're trying to shoot down some fantasy argument isn't some chronic obsession you have, I don't know what else to call it.

day in and day out

Oh good grief. I go months without posting anything. When I do post, I post to lots of people; I engage in debates occasionally. I guess that makes me a complete anomaly on this forum.

I disagree with you.

There are many things GWB has accomplished that to others seemed impossible, especially after that fake of a president clinton. The problem is too many have short one track memories

GWB does what he's said he will do, he's a man of his word. He and the Republican party can count on my vote. I will NEVER vote for a commie democrat.....NEVER. They're the ones who you should watch, everyone of them is a liar, and that's putting it mildly.

Build a WALL or bye bye...

Neither I nor the conservatives I run with give a crap about immigration. We care about abortion, gay marriage, and guns. All other issues fall pretty far below these three.

Ignore him Thatcher. He's doing a rope-a-dope on you.

Trying to ignore Howlin is like trying to ignore a splinter.

It's not your fault she's interested AND wrong about the same issues you care about.

Since when do "conservatives" not "give a crap" about selective enforcement of the law?

About HCR, they're going to vote either for their GOP incumbent or against their DUmmie incumbent. And the ComPost knows this.

The only thing that matters, and the ComPost knows this too, is whether BillyBob -- who is currently enjoying a full fishing season and doesn't give a rat's butt about some DC commie spreading ComPost -- is going to change his vote against his longtime GOP Congressman; and if gas is under $3.00 come Election Day, he ain't.
