Ten Commandments Judge trails in polls

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Roy Moore's unsuccessful fight to display the Ten Commandments and keep his job as Alabama's chief justice made him a national hero to religious conservatives three years ago.

But Moore isn't being treated like a hero in the state's topsy-turvy race for governor.

He trails Governor Bob Riley 2 to 1 in the polls and has an even wider gap in fund-raising as they head toward the Republican primary June 6.

It's a scenario that seemed unlikely in 2003, when Moore rose to national prominence and Riley took a body blow from voters who rejected his proposed $1.2 billion tax increase by a 2-to-1 ratio. Now Riley's running as a tax-cutter, thanks to the state's rebounding economy

If the Ten Commandments is his only issue, then he deserves to be way behind.

While on the state Supreme Court, Roy Moore did the right thing but did it in the wrong way. In the process, he made himself look like an opportunist.

With Moore running behind, I wonder if he will use the illegal immigration card. I could imagine him making demagogic speeches about illegals being part of a Pagan Invasion.

"If the Ten Commandments is his only issue, then he deserves to be way behind."

Well - I don't know - but this Wikipedia entry sums it up rather nicely for me ... I would take this as the Only issue. All else pales.

Text of the commandments
The following is the text of the commonly accepted (by Christian and Jewish authorities) commandments as found in the book of Exodus:

"God spoke all these words, saying: I am the Lord your God,who brought you out of Egypt, from the place of slavery. Do not have any other gods before Me. Do not represent [such] gods by any carved statue or picture of anything in the heaven above, on the earth below, or in the water below the land. Do not bow down to [such gods] or worship them. I am God your Lord, a God who demands exclusive worship. Where My enemies are concerned, I keep in mind the sin of the fathers for [their] descendants, to the third and fourth [generation]. But for those who love Me and keep My commandments, I show love for thousands [of generations]. Do not take the name of God your Lord in vain. God will not allow the one who takes His name in vain to go unpunished. Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy. You can work during the six weekdays and do all your tasks. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to God your Lord. Do not do anything that constitutes work. [This includes] you, your son, your daughter, your slave, your maid, your animal, and the foreigner in your gates. It was during the six weekdays that God made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. God therefore blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and mother. You will then live long on the land that God your Lord is giving you. Do not commit murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not testify as a false witness against your neighbor. Do not be envious of your neighbor's house. Do not be envious of your neighbor's wife, his slave, his maid, his ox, his donkey, or anything else that is your neighbor's." (Exodus 20)

It appears that Alabama voters have Roy's number.

Most of his support in his confrontation with the Alabama Supreme Court came from out of state.

I am curious - as an outsider - what is Roys' number?

Judge Moore would be a good senator - as governor he would be Fob James lite.

"Do not commit murder."

This has been a "biggie" for me for over 50 years.

The commandment does not say "thou shall not kill" - as we were brainwashed to believe - at least I was.

Murder and killing are two different things ... our troops kill ... murder on the other hand ... going back to Wikipedia ...

In criminal law, murder is the crime where one or more human beings causes the death of others, without lawful excuse, and with intent to kill or with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, which is traditionally termed "malice aforethought". In attempted murder, the mens rea requirement, Latin for "guilty mind", is limited. In some common law jurisdictions, an accused is not guilty of murder if the victim lives for longer than a year and a day after the attack. This reflects the likelihood that, if the victim has survived so long after the initial attack, there will be other factors contributing to the cause of death and so break the chain of causation. Subject to the local statute of limitation, the accused can still be charged with an offense representing the seriousness of the initial assault. But, with the advance of modern medicine, the majority of countries have abandoned a fixed time period and test causation on the facts. In most countries murder is considered the most serious crime, and invokes the highest punishment available under the law. As with most legal terms, the precise definition varies between jurisdictions.

I do not condone the taking of human life. However when someone wants to take out me or my/others children ... killing is appropriate.

I dont't know what these pissy whiners are about - however if I were in your state I would vote for you in a heart beat.

Some did, but a lot did not.

He was overwhelmingly elected to the state supreme court, based on that issue.

I doubt he will be elected Gov. Alabamians tend to elect sleazeballs.

If electing a sleazeball was the key issue, then Roy would be a shoe-in because Roy is the second coming of Wallace and during his term Siegelman thought he was as well. Not that this was unexpected. As of right now, polls show that even Siegelman would probably knock off Moore. Incidentally, Siegelman and Moore would be the most entertaining matchup. Lucy Baxley still has no positions on anything, corruption trial aside, we know Siegelman stands for the same things he's stood for all his career, meaning he's on the right-side of the Democratic Party, pro-gambling, tough on crime, yada-yada. The same thing we've been hearing since the 1970s. Only difference is, when he calls for increasing ethical standards, it now rings hollow.

Riley basically, we know where he stands, and I do think that without Katrina, this would have been more of a race, but during Katrina, he was admirable, and in general, he's ran the cleanest administration this state has had since probably Brewer. He'd clobber Siegelman, and he should landslide over Lucy. Baxley by the same token, would likely clobber Moore. Siegelman and Moore would be a race because it would be a contest the media could hype up, the war between the two Alabama's, basically, I think if you're a reporter, you want Moore vs. Siegelman, and I do think Siegelman will end up taking the nomination if he's acquitted (maybe even if he's not) cause he's right, whites who normally never vote in the Republican primary will be voting in it. Now, partially I think its because as time has moved on, in more and more urban areas, if it's white, then local (non-municipal) races are more and more decided in the GOP primary. It is also partly Roy, and I think Roy likely loses this. I do worry however because Roy may also bring to the polls alot of people who normally don't vote.
