SANTA CRUZ It may not be a local race, but some in Santa Cruz are lining up to support congressional hopeful Pete McCloskey, the Republican primary challenger to Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy.
Pombo, who has proposed bills to sell 15 national parks, abolish protection for 150 million acres of wilderness and weaken the Endangered Species Act, has irked the national environmental community to the point that it is rallying for his Republican opponent, even here in Santa Cruz.
Pombo is "not a desirable congressman," said Democrat and Santa Cruz resident Eleanor Wasson, 98. Wasson is hosting a fundraiser for McCloskey on Saturday and expects many in the county to turn out.

Hello Fog724! ...Thank you! Yes, I read that in the paper this morning too. Pombo may well get my first 2006 campaign contribution (...and your ping inspired the little hot-off-the-presses thing below...grin.)

She and her husband wouldn't dare put any kind of conservative bumper sticker on their cars--the cars would be keyed to ribbons within 24 hours. Not necessarily. It depends on which particular progressive is assigned to your car. I drove to Santa Cruz with a Bush sticker on my car in '04 and got my radio antenna broken off. The car was not keyed, however.

I work in San Francisco, and wouldn't dare put *anything* on my car for the same reason. That's such a lovely city! Shame what the liberals have done to it. I grew up in San Jose, and used to love to go up to the city and sit on a dock at Fisherman's Wharf, watching the sailboats.

I think Pombo is nuts. I thought Pete McCloskey was dead. Last I heard of him he was running against Nixon in the primary on an anti-war platform.

What the maps don't show is that the federal government initially held title to almost all the land west of the Appalachians but used it as a revenue source selling it off over the last century and a half.

In the early 70's McKlosky had a neon peace sign about three stories tall on the side of his bank where it could be seen for miles coming into Walnut Creek on Hwy 24. Nope that was Fortney (Pete) Stark.
The people that took over in Santa Cruz are wacked out way beyond the point of being useful idiots. They adore Angela Davis who made her fame by proclaiming to be a communist, but has a million dollar home above the coast on the north side and tools around town (when she's not speaking for big bucks somewhere) in her BMW SUV.
Any city that takes a university campus deserves what it gets.

OOpps - the memory is fading... Pete Stark inherited that bank, which I guess is what makes him a good leftist. You know how capitalism is bad and all that, but if you inherit the money, then it's OK to be rich as Crosus as long as you're a Democrat.
