MK: Abolish kashrut of food products

Moshe Sharoni (Pensioners party) suggests abolishing kashrut on food products to make them more affordable

During Knesset session on Monday regarding the price increase of bread, MK Moshe Sharoni of the Pensioners party suggested a unique idea – to totally abolish kashrut on food products in order to make them more affordable, according to Israel’s leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

"Everyone here talks about the increase of bread prices," he said, "and everyone screams 'gevalt'. They also talked about meat. Why don't we simply cancel the kashrut of meat and diary products and in-turn they will be inexpensive? Food products will cost significantly less. No one talks about that."

Sharoni's words, naturally, spurred controversy in the plenum. "Aren't you ashamed?" yelled at him chairman of the National Union-NRP party MK Zevulun Orlev. "You should be ashamed. Are you a Jewish Knesset member?"

Sources at the Pensioners party were not quick to identify with their party member's views: "Remarks like these will only hurt us. The remarks don't represent our party," one source said.

I always consider it a good day if I learn something new, and this article forced me to look up kashrut http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashrut indicates it means: "is the name of the Jewish dietary laws."

The cost of kashrut certification in food per unit has got to be significantly less that .01 agorot.

This sounds like the Pensioners Party is just the old Shinui.

I think this guy is senile.

The only other "people" who complain about being "forced" to buy kosher products are the retards at Stormfront.

So true - I've seen pamphlets alleging that the kosher certification marks on canned goods are part of a conspiracy by guess who?

This guy is so stupid he doesn't even realize that half the consumers in Israel will avoid purchasing products that are not kosher, thereby causing the price to INCREASE.

Companies in the U.S. go out of their way to obtain kashrut certification for their products in order to increase their customer base.

But in Israel, you're dealing with ferocious atheists who are also socialists, who don't understand the basic principles of economics.

What the heck do they put in their weed over there?!!?!?!?!?!? Whatever it is, someone tell them to quit smoking it!

Rush was talking about liberal / socialist "Jews" (JINO) earlier today. The same people who feeling guilty for the Palestinians. We have people like this in the US Congress and in Hollywood, who hate themselves and want to canibalize their own existance. Unfortunatly there are way too many here on this planet ruining the world for the rest of us. Guess they are the same people who worship the golden calf.

On seeing the headline I assumed it was an Arab Knesset member. But it's a Jew, and not even a member of a radical left party? The "Pensioners" Party is advocating the repeal of kashrut in the Jewish State??

You gotta wonder why the "Stormfronters" and their ilk are so afraid of kosher food. Do they think it's fluoridated or something?

For non meat products I doubt it's that much. A few food producers attempted to calculate the cost when the "Kosher Tax" nonsense was being floated, and they found they couldn't. Among those that could, General Mills-1/20,000 cent per package, General Foods' "Bird's Eye" Unit--6.5 millionths (.0000065) of a cent per item

Makes sense. And of course, by giving kosher certification it broadens the market for the product, enabling an even larger scale of production which decreases prices for the consumer.

Kosher certification probably makes products slightly cheaper when you net out all the factors.
