PHOENIX -- A middle-age Hispanic man pushes a mower across the lawn of a giant home in an affluent neighborhood. A middle-age white woman pulls up driving a BMW.
"Can you please come here por favor," she said, sticking her head out the window. "I was wondering how much you charge to landscape this home?"
The man stops and asks: "Why would I charge to landscape my own yard?"
She blushes and drives off. The commercial clip later freezes and an on-screen message appears: "I am an American."
The commercial is being filmed for a new Web site created by two 30-something Phoenix Republicans frustrated by the political rhetoric over illegal immigration. Inspired by the recent pro-immigrant student walkouts, marches and demonstrations in Phoenix, Bettina Nava and Max Fose launched www.iamaproudamerican.com.

Ohh puuhhhleeze ... PC sucks!
If 90% of the landscapers in my neighborhood are Hispanic, how is that a stereotype?
I am actually glad to see the legal Hispanic communities standing up and separating themselves from the illegal immigration debate. The illegal side is trying to make this a 'Hispanic' issue, when in reality, this is an issue on illegal entry, not on someone's cultural or racial identity.
Sounds like an American doing a job Americans won't do to me. What a stupid ad.
And who's being stereotyped here? Oops, white and successful? She doesn't count.
Here we go now starts the ads on TV. Demonstrating and showing their muggs on TV weekly isn't enough for them.
Some stereotypes are grounded in truth.
black NBA players.
white NHL players.
etc.
I think the problem is assuming that if someone is Hispanic, they are illegal. The pro-Illegal side is trying to make this an argument about the entire Hispanic community, not about illegal immigration.
Yes- we may not assume this is a Hispanic laborer, even though 99% of the hispanics we see mowing yards in Atlanta are exactly that. The thought police will not permit us to use the logical law of probabilities.
I do my own lawns as do most of my neighbors since we can't afford what these "americans" charge.
Even if it is the truth?
Hispanic Americans should start a campaign: "The US needs a national ID system so that illegal aliens can be identified. Employers and landlords who do business with people without these ID cards should be punished. We are good Americans. We have nothing to hide. We are with you!"
Just because he owns the house doesn't mean he'a A.) An American or B.) legal.
"The man stops and asks: "Why would I charge to landscape my own yard?"
When my wife and I moved into her parents home after the death of her mother I was mowing the lawn one day and the next door neighbor asked me how much I would charge to mow his lawn. Everyone in the neighborhood used a gardener but me.
<< Just because he owns the house doesn't mean he'a A.) An American or B.) legal. >>
or C.) not a professional landscaper working in his yard on his day off. ;-)
Shouldn't anyone who is supposed to be here and is allowed to work have a social security card?
I think I'm the only person in Georgetown (DC) who weed-whacks her own yard. (BTW, I went out and bought my weed-whacker this past May 1st.)
Well , I don't see any thing wrong with the ad myself and kind of glad they are putting it out because of family reasons. Its good to remind people once in a while that people have some assumptions that are wrong once in a while. Its like the article says ,the ads are edgy and a little uncorfortable but thats what makes them memorable.
