Before anyone starts disrespecting Snort, just remember that at one time, he was in command of every Tomcat squadron in existence. He is also a former Pukin Dog, and one of the very best fighter pilots this nation has produced. Everyone has a bad day.

Fortunately he walked away from this bad day...and I have no doubt will be paying the price through ribbing for a long time to come.

Yeah, and Snort's was still a good landing - he walked away from the bird.

Today, I'm just happy I'm me and not him.

Yeah, but I knew him when he worked on the hill as USN liason to the House and he was as obnoxious as they come. When his air wing relieved ours in the Eastern Med in '89 they challenged us to a 1 v 1. Our guy was Gil "Sluggo" Butler and he came back with a HUD tape full of Snort's Tomcat.

Bravo Zulu on your comment. All pilots, even the best (like Snort), make mistakes. As a kid I met most of the old school Top Guns (back when they flew the Phantoms). I also met a lot of the stunt pilots, Art Scholl among them. I had the good luck and honor to have met and gotten to know Bevo Howard about a month before he made his last mistake. These men have testicular fortitude that weasels who make disparaging comments only dream about.

His successor at FITWING seemed to have a different opinion. When he was the commodore I don't think he ever flew a jet he didn't break. He was notorious for overstresses and not following his own wing SOP. When we were busting torque tubes left and right he was out fighting with the main flaps down.

One thing I forgot that makes Snort the savior of the Tomcat community.
He pretty much hung it out there by himself allowing the LANTIRN manufacturer access to two jets to demonstrate the capability. Without it the Tomcat would have been useless for its last decade of service.
