Reducing Secondhand Smoke Would Slash Heart Disease Rates, Study Says

Eliminating the threat of secondhand smoke would prevent more than 228,000 new cases of heart disease and 119,000 heart-related deaths over the next 25 years, according to a new study.

Using a model to estimate the impact of eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke on heart disease, researchers found stopping secondhand smoke would quickly reduce the number of heart-related deaths. This effect would increase over time, adding up to hundreds of thousands of preventable heart attacks and other problems.

National surveys suggest that 4 percent to 17 percent of the nonsmoking population (depending on age and sex) are exposed to secondhand smoke at home, work, or at play.

Estimating the Impact of Secondhand Smoke

Researchers say current estimates show that average daily exposure to secondhand smoke among exposed individuals is equivalent to smoking one cigarette per day; that conveys about one-third of the additional risk of heart disease associated with smoking a pack a day.

Based on those estimates, researchers calculated the effects of eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke in 2005 over the next 25 years in the U.S.

Their results show that:

--New cases of heart disease would be reduced by 9,300 in the first year, adding up to 228,300 cases prevented by 2030.

--The number of heart attacks reported would be reduced by 8,100 in the first year and increase to 13,500 per year by 2030, resulting in a total reduction of 292,500 heart attacks over the 25-year period.

--Total heart disease-related deaths would drop by 2,200 in the first year after eliminating secondhand smoke and rise to 6,400 prevented deaths per year by 2030.

The results of the study were presented this week at an American Heart Association meeting in Washington, D.C.

I don't know if they smoke or not, my guess is no, but I bet they drive a car with an internal combustion engine.

They smoke. Not a leaf wrapped in a piece of paper. With a tailpipe burning oil and gasoline.

People are so incredibly gullible and stupid. How can a thinking, rationale person think that secondhand smoke could be anywhere near as bad as all the other pollutants.

With dim wits like this in society it is easy to see how things like WWII in Germany got started, how people were led into China cultural revolution.

The question is, why the heck are those people here on FR?

People can be as fat as they want to be, as long as I don't have to pay for their food or healthcare.

"(I'm not trying to suggest such a correlation does not exist, but accurate judgement of its magnitude requires recognizing the existence of non-smoking-related cancer)."

Here's what I don't understand...

Clearly, the active ingredient and addictive ingredient of tobacco smoke (nicotine) does not cause cancer. Nicotine chewing gum that is available without a prescription carries NO cancer warning.

Cigarettes have hundreds of other ingredients, and the ingredients vary from brand to brand. Why has no one tried to identify the ingredient(s) that cause the "cancer" and remove them? Or identify the brands that don't contain those substances.

I was just making an observation. I hardly ever see anyone smoking in my vicinity.

Because the Japanese can still smoke in bars and restaurants where you don't go.  That's why!  They aren't forced out onto the street like WE are!

So funny actually. They just banned smoking in bars here in NJ . Nj is cancer alley .North NJ has more pollution in it's poor excuse for air, more mercury pools underground , is the biggest waste dump on the planet , yet they are worried about smoking. Even funnier is that it's banned at bars EXCEPT in Atlantic City casinos. Hummm , think BIG $$$$ and the mob helped them make that exception or is it that there is something special about casino air ?

First question. Who paid for the study? Follow the money. It is a shame we don't have many unbiased scientist anymore. Got to make the donors happy so the money keeps coming.

I smoke, have all my life... I don't like the extra taxes I pay, but I'm not ready to give it up yet.

Start rolling your own.  I can roll a beautiful carton for under $8 dollars.  Can beat it!!!

We pay Medicaid with our taxes due to people's bad habits.....The list is long...and it isn't all smokers...or even second-hand smoke. The smokers were just an easy touch for the trial lawyers.

Don't worry, there would be plenty of us in the ugly section with you. ;)

The upside will be that we will be the ones who will still be laughing, joking and enjoying life while the nanny-staters will be sitting in their resturaunts eating their bland, government mandated health food (it's good for you!) and feeling glum because they know that somebody...somewhere....is enjoying themselves.

And that just won't do.

You mean the freedom to pollute the air with your toxic smoke?

Sorry to butt in, but the anti-smoking nazis are lame. Are you a member of the GreenPeace folks who believe cow farts cause global warming?

To avoid all toxic gasses, dial 1-800-INTEL and ask them for the going rate to live in one of their clean rooms.

Shaking hands carries the flu virus, and sun rays causes skin cancer.

True story;

Recently, my wife and I went to buy some burgers at a local McDonalds that was holding a charity event that day. All proceeds went to the family of a young lady that was murdered in the Restaurant a few days earlier.

Standing in the long line outside, the couple behind us smelled the horrid odor of someone smoking the required distance away from the entrance, maybe even further. The breeze was coming our way, so naturally, it was going to carry.

Of course, they started complaining, like good little smoke gnatzies and were almost to the point of measuring how far the guy was away. Tired of their complaining, I turned and said, "why don't they just hang all of them." The man thought a second and answered that it would be a quicker death for them.

Thinking about it, it dawned on me. Here we are standing in line for an unhealthy greaseburger for you and your children, who were already overweight a tad and you worry because someone maybe 50 feet away from you lights up.

Seems to me they shouldn't be worrying about soemone else smoking when they aren't following good health practices either.

Because it's a business open to the public,

The public has CHOICES. I hate loud rap music. It's disgusting to me. Ergo, I don't go in those places.

I don't like fat liberals. The sight of them make me sick, and I lose weight from vomiting when I see one like these two:

My doctor advises I only have twoo weeks to live due to malnutrition caused by fat people.
