ITALY'S Parliament failed to elect the country's new president in a second round of voting, further delaying centre-left leader Romano Prodi's bid to get a mandate to form a government.
More than 700 of the nearly 1000 electors comprising members of Parliament and regional representatives submitted blank ballots, making it impossible for any one candidate to obtain the necessary two-thirds of votes.
Mr Prodi's Union coalition has been pushing for Communist Giorgio Napolitano, a widely respected senator-for-life, to assume the presidency. But members of the conservative coalition of outgoing Premier Silvio Berlusconi said they were not ready to yield.
Casting blank ballots was seen as a delay tactic while the two blocs pursued behind-the-scenes negotiations.
Ping!
That country is a joke.
A widely-respected COMMUNIST for Italy's Presidency ?!? Jeez, how 'bout something a bit lighter like a more respectable Nazi ?
'700 of the nearly 1000 electors cast blank ballots'
The Communists in Italy have moderated their views to become electable. Anyone Communist won't fly with the Centrist Catholic party. I think the government will fail to form and new elections will be called.
A bad concept.
Moderate Commies ? I've heard it all.
They nearly formed their own ruling coalition in the 50s until the USA dumped loads of money into the right-wing opposition party. The majority of their support is in the southern half of Italy, they are supported by a good number of the union workers. You have to understand that in Italy, people don't vote individual, they vote as blocks. If a union boss says vote communist, everyone in the union votes communist, if your priest tells you to vote conservative, you vote conservative. The women generally listen to their priests, the men to their bosses, or union bosses.
Oh, I understand how it goes there. I'm just saying that there is no room in civilized society for a Communist party, period.

How can you say such a thing!!
Maybe so, but it's bloody hard to beat Italian hospitality!
And they laughed at us in 2000. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!
Hiltery has a shot at becoming the next president. That in my opinion should be a joke.
Maybe Arizona can send them JANET Napolitano.
I share your heritage and your observations.
After a heavy dinner of pasta and wine, I often fail to get around to electing a president.
LOL! I know what you mean...
Why aren't the Dems calling for US forces to withdraw from Italy and the country to be split into 3?
