While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are. According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed.
"It's not a secret where the Minuteman volunteers are going to be," Mario Martinez said Monday.
"This ... simply makes two basic statements -- that we will not allow any lawlessness of any type, and that if an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person."
Minuteman members were not so sanguine about the arrangement, however, saying that reporting their location to Mexican officials nullifies their effectiveness along the border and could endanger their lives.
"Now we know why it seemed like Mexican officials knew where we were all the time," said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. "It's unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country. They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels.
"They just basically endangered the lives of American people."

Other than assisting the illegals in breaking U.S. laws by illegally entering our country.
Seems fair to me that Mexico should alert us to when and where the illegals are going to enter so we can have a van waiting to pick them up.
This may just erupt in a physical battle and part of me wishes it would, otherwise how can it be stopped. I guess the only solution is to continue to get this information out and hold the politicians that we have the power to elect to the fire and put a huge squeeze on the ones in office. What else can be done? The minutemen, are a huge bright light on the very, very corrupt/dark triangle of the US government/business/illegal immigration.
These are our tax dollars damn it and aren't these the politicians we put in office? Once again I am furious. I wish we could recall them all like bad products except for the truly conservative and anti-amnesty/pro border security folks.
This is NOT about illegals' rights after they're arrested. This is about our government being complicit in helping criminals avoid being caught!
And fill us in on the details of THIS discussion while he's at it:
Our "elected" leaders (no matter who you vote for you vote for us, the one party with two names) pay lip service at best to the Constitution, it is a minor annoyance nothing more. Look at all the blantantly unconstitutional laws already on the books. Nope we are now the serfs of the ruling class and they could not care less about laws, or We the People.
Spoken like a true poet.
No need. The smugglers (or, as I suspect, their bribees in the Mexican Army) have been known to actually go out with metal detectors and radio direction finders to hunt the sensors down.
I find it very ironic that Republicans have the senate, congress and the presidency but instead of being stronger for it, they are weaker and may cease to exist.
I thought it was the party out of power, the one that loses in election after election and have nothing to offer, that would be in danger of disappearing.
Forgive me, but, I can't remember the man's name in the middle.
The minute men do not make arrests, they do not detain, they info the BP that illegals are entering the country at x, y, z. Ergo, informing Mexico of thier location is NOT a protocol of international law.
You aren't alone. I'm getting a greater appreciation for what the signers of the Declaration of Independence must have felt prior to signing on to that document.
"Our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."
Damn them for pushing us closer and closer to having to do it again...
Anyone have a link to the original documents?
Do you want to elect the socialist/commie candidate for the this side? He's already in office. Odds are he'll support McCain, the Commie.
"Curiouser and curiouser.."
It comes into play if the Minutemen make any arrests--and it's a long-standing requirement of international law.
The Minutemen (MMCDC) do not "make arrests." We do not have that power (unless it is a citizens arrest on private property), and are not law enforcement. We report our sitings directly to the Border Patrol, and they make the formal arrest.
I pinged a few MM to clarify if I am not accurate in my understanding.
The only positive angle I can see in this whole thing, is that if the BP tells the Mexican gov't where the MM are posted...the illegal invaders will go to another area to avoid the encounter with them. From there, the BP can lie in wait for them for arrest.
