GOP lawmakers want Pelosi to remove Mollohan

Republican Reps. John Carter (R-Texas) and Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) are expected to send House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) a letter tomorrow asking her to remove Rep. Alan Mollohan (W.Va.) from the Appropriations Committee.

Mollohan stepped aside as the ranking Democrat on the ethics committee late last month amid ethical questions about his financial dealings with private contractors and nonprofit organizations that received millions of dollars in federal funds.

“The allegations against Congressman Mollohan are directly related to his conduct on the Committee,” the two former judges wrote in a draft copy of the letter circulated last night.

“Not only is his continued position on that Committee in conflict with the allegations made against him, it also places him in the untenable position of exercising jurisdiction and influence over the Justice Department, the very entity that is currently investigating him,” the letter continued.

Mollohan is the ranking Democrat on the Appropriations subcommittee with oversight of the Departments of Commerce, Justice and State.

“I look forward to reading their letter to Speaker [Dennis] Hastert [R-Ill.] on Congressman [Tom] DeLay [R-Texas], Congressman [Bob] Ney [R-Ohio], Congressman [John] Doolittle [R-Calif.] and Congressman [Richard] Pombo [R-Calif.],” Pelosi spokeswoman Jennifer Crider said. “I must have missed their letter on incarcerated Congressman [Randy “Duke”] Cunningham [R-Calif.].”

Mollohan's Future

Long-time congressman Alan Mollohan was brought up during most of the national sunday talk shows...for allegations about his use of federal funds and his personal finances. But we wanted to know how that might affect his chances for re-election in November. And we went to a town outside the Parkersburg area.

"Everything can affect reelection," said Rosa Hackathorn. "It depends on what people think, and how they feel about it."

When asked if she would vote for Mollohan, Hackathorn said no. But others point to past history as an indication of Mollohan's immediate political future.

"People tend to reelect whoever represents their district," said St. Marys schoolteacher Linda Seth. "We believe the best of the people closest to us."

Pleasants County, where these people were interviewed, is as much a part of the First Congressional District as Wood County is. People here have mixed reactions as to how they will vote in this fall's elections.

"It probably would, yeah," said Texas Scadden.

"I have to make up my mind about who I'm going to vote for," said Donna Harding.

But others have no doubt about their congressman.

"I find it hard to believe he's done anything intentionally wrong," said Seth, who lives in Ritchie County. "My impression of Mollohan is that he's a good man and good for the people."

Mollohan last month stepped down from his seat on the House Ethics Committee after the allegations were made public.

He will be opposed in November by Republican Chris Wakim.

Obviously someone taught the witch how to pronounce the word 'honest' but forgot to tell her what it meant.

I think Mollohan should be kept on the committee and in his reelection bid. It can only help the GOP for him to remain visible.

I've got something for the "stay home" Republican crowd to do on election day. Practice saying, "Speaker of the House Pelosi."

Pelosi spokeswoman Jennifer Crider said. “I must have missed their letter on incarcerated Congressman [Randy “Duke”] Cunningham [R-Calif.].” The republicans don't have to write a note about Cunningham, he RESIGNED from the house, and pled guilty to charges. The republicans also don't have to write a note about DeLay, he stepped down when he was indicted, and is resigning his seat. I don't know about the other two california names, and Ney doesn't seem to be under formal investigation yet. Note the republicans didn't sent a letter about Jefferson, who just got named for bribery -- by a man who pled guilty to bribing him.

Good to see the light and heat put on Mollohan and his blatant self-enriching. May it eventually reach Jay Rockefeller for his seditious leaking of classified defense information.

Hey toots: Cunningham resigned and is rightly serving time in the hokey. He's not the issue here. Tell your boss to tell Mollohan to at least step down from the committee. I know that he's a Rat and asking him to resign is like politely asking Muslim terrorists to behave.
