AP) St. Louis Park, Minn. State Rep. Keith Ellison won the Democratic Party's endorsement as its candidate for the 5th Congressional District on Saturday, putting himself on a path to be Minnesota's first black member of Congress.

Ellison's rapid victory was unexpected in the crowded field of candidates seeking the seat. By the third ballot he was just a few votes short of the 60 percent needed to claim the endorsement, and the two remaining contenders -- Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman and peace activist Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer -- withdrew and backed Ellison.

"We've got to unify," Ellison, 42, told the crowd after his victory. "We've got to come together. City and suburb, straight and gay, black and white -- we've got to come together, y'all."

"I love taxes," Nelson-Pallmeyer said at one point, to loud applause from delegates.

Ellison, an attorney, is married to a high school math teacher and has four children. He's also a practicing Muslim, and said he hoped that would be symbolically important for Muslims in America. "It's good for people to see a reasonable, moderate, peace-loving face of Islam," he said.

That's what I thought: he's black.

My guess is that he's still toast. Any other skin color and there would be no question.

I'm sure they'll want him on a military intellegence committee, just as soon as possible.

From what I've been hearing, his being a muslim was actually a well kept secret. After someone in the press mentioned it, folks did some internet searching and it appeared that his religious affiliation was pretty well scrubbed from the public record. But now that he has been outed, he's going to try to make it a positive thing in his campaign.

The morons in Hennepin and Ramsey county, along with the Duluth area will be squealing with delight if they get this guy elected.

I only remember him and his sarcastic remarks in regards to the Minnesota Personal Protection Act as I listened to him
in legislative debate.

He came off as smug, arrogant and condescending. IOW, a perfect fit for this job vacancy.

Is this seat in a loony toon part of the state or did the Dems just hand the GOP a win?

Well, of course he wouldn't want me to be armed, in accordance with my second ammendment rights.

That would make things more difficult, wouldn't it?
