Over 90,000 public employees were laid off until June 30.

Puerto Rico Population 3,927,188 (July 2006 est.)
Labor force 1.3 million (2000)
Seems like an awful high percentage of the 'employed' are 'working' for the government.

Especially since Puerto Rico is not a state.
This debacle going on in the island can only bolster the arguments of statehood opponents, and with good reason.
