He usually doesn't play day games after night games and games like tonights against Houston which is a makeup game from last month which got rained out. Felipe (Alou) usually makes him available for pinch hit duty though, (the HR he hit off of Billy Wagner against the Mets a few weeks ago, #711 I believe) was in pinch hit duty.

Saw a photo in the sports pages a few days ago... Bonds walking to the outfield and the fans in the bleechers holding a sign reading something along the line of "Babe hit his HRs on beer and hotdogs."

Priceless... and true!

An amazing thread. I remember arguments like this many years ago with my friends about who was the best baseball player; what would have happened if black players could play in the majors; what about Latin Americans; what if Japan had taken up baseball in the 1930's instead of imperialism...

One thing for sure; only one pitcher can pitch at a time, and only one batter can bat at the same time.

Comparing one era in a sport to another is good fun, but the real measure of a player's greatness is who remembers him after the game changes and the current heroes change.

How many kids today can identify which sport George Mikan played, let alone which team he played for?

How about Sam Huff? (I would have said Ray Nitzche, but I can't spell his name.)

Babe Ruth will be a legend for a long time, and has been a legend for a long time already. And that's because he was the dominant player of his time. There is no house that Jordan built. Comparing a mortal like Barry Bonds to Babe Ruth might keep people busy for a while, but it's not fair to Barry Bonds.

Prime-Time is a paid Giants shill. Works at A T & T Ballpark, cashing in on Barry Bonds' fame and fortune.

That might be countered by the current umpiring that restricts "head-hunting" by pitchers in such a way as to give the batter the advantage when they crowd the plate.

Babe Ruth saved baseball from the Black Sox scandal. Bonds nearly ruined it with the steriods scandal.

Thanks to the Babe and others, however, it is too great a game even for Bonds to ruin.

I'd like to see the asterik put back on Roger Maris record with the explanation of last player to set this record without suspicion of using performance enhancing drugs.

If Bond's character were toilet paper, there wouldn't be enough to wipe a hamster's behind.

Honest Question: Would any of you have any animosity towards Bonds if he didn't play in San Francisco?

He did not need juice to set records!

Actually, no. He did need juice to set these records.

A cheater is a cheater. If here were a Diamondback, I'd be calling the office demanding his removal before I buy another ticket.

"Babe stole home [I think] 10 times in his career. Has blimphead?"

I don't really follow baseball much anymore, but I do have some memories.

One day in 1988 (I think) I was in Baltimore (old stadium) sitting on the third base side.

I watched Marty Barrett take off from 3rd base and I recall saying to my friend. "What is he doing?"

That is the only time in my life that I ever saw a player steal home. That was so cool.

The Red Sox lost that night. That was the year that the Orioles opened up something like Zero and 18. I forget the nbrs.

Stealing Home is the most awesome play in baseball.

Another curious aspect of ballpark sizes is that the shrinking ballparks have made triples somewhat more rare...

Excellent point. Whenever triples are discussed my thoughts always turn to the great Sam Crawford and his MLB leading 312 three baggers.

He did not need juice to set records!

Yes he did. He never would've hit 73 homers in 2001 without the juice. He never would have approached the 660 homers that Willie Mays hit without the juice. It just was not going to happen.

A great player to be sure, a surefire Hall of Famer without the roids, he was going to be a 500-500 guy with an outside shot at being the first ever 600 HRs - 600 SBs guy, but the roids made him so big that he stopped stealing bases.
