Club For Growth: Time for this Mr. Smith to go to Washington

Adrian Smith – Nebraska’s 3rd District

Here we have a clear cut race between two Republicans – one is a tax cutter, the other is a tax hiker. State Senator Adrian Smith is considered one of the legislature’s strongest supporters of limited government and earned one of the highest ratings from Nebraskans for Freedom, an anti-tax hike group.

A few years ago, when the tax and spenders pushed a huge tax hike through the legislature, Smith helped lead the fight against it -- standing up to the pressure from his own party’s leadership in the process. We could use more congressmen with that kind of backbone on spending and taxes in Washington. Smith has never supported a tax increase and he strongly believes in limited government.

Here is Adrian in his own words:

“These Founders … also knew our elected officials and those who staff our government offices not to be angels either. So, while necessary, government must be strictly limited. . . . [M]ore and more government is not the answer to our problems. In fact, more and more government often causes more and more problems. Instead, the answer is found in freeing men and women, so they may think, dream, and invent.

“We must put the ravenous government on a diet.”

Clearly Adrian will be a fighter for the limited government so important to our nation’s economy and future.

In contrast, one of Adrian’s leading opponents is Jay Vavricek, the mayor of Grand Island. Not only has Vavricek supported sales tax hikes in the past, he led the fight for them, chairing committees to urge voters to back the proposals. He even called another tax increase for an event center “essential.”

Adrian’s other leading opponent is John Hanson, an aide to Congressman Tom Osborne, who is leaving this seat to run for governor. Hanson’s key priority is passage of a 2007 farm bill, including support for ethanol.

This is one of the safest Republican seats in the country – Bush beat Kerry by three to one! The winner of the May 9 primary will almost certainly win in November. The question is will the winner be Adrian Smith -- the Reaganite who believes in limited government and has acted consistently on those beliefs?

Sorry that this is a little dated.

Smith is one of the Club's 8 candidates for 2006. Here is a chance to elect a genuine conservative in Nebraska's Third District tomorrow.

Nebraska FReepers, if you believed in Ronald Reagan's agenda to cut spending and lower taxes, Smith is your candidate.

Several elected Club for Growth candidates turned out to be RINOs.

Do your research before support anyone.

I'm not in the third district, but if I were, I'd vote for Adrian. He's been a consistent pro-freedom, pro-RKBA, anti-tax, anti-Ernie conservative in the legislature.

That is ridiculous. They are the best political organization, ideologically, in the United States. And you get the most bang for your buck with them. I don't see why anyone would give money to the Republican Party when you can give $$$ to stellar candidates in areas that really make a difference.

I agree. Club For Growth is a far safer bet than the GOP. And unlike the GOP, they actually target liberal Republicans like Chafee for defeat. Puts the fear into the RINOs.

The Club For Growth doesn't support the Paleocon vision on Immigration reform. It leans towards President Bush's version.

From their website:

Club for Growth Policy Goals: I hate to suggest it but maybe every last organization in America doesn't have to wade into this Amnestygate thing. Given how they fund candidates, I don't think they need a position on abortion either.

Club For Growth is actually a permanent embodiment of Reagan's political legacy. It's a pity that the GOP doesn't want that role.
